L'Arche Chicago

L'Arche Chicago L'Arche Chicago is a community of people with and without disabilities sharing life together in faith

Advocacy matters‼️

We had the privilege of joining other IDD Community Providers at the West Suburban Regional Legislative Breakfast to discuss critical issues affecting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Illinois. During Breakfast, we met state legislators and listened to their advocacy tips.

📣 One tip: respectful persistence. Small, steady actions matter more than you think. We’ll be sharing ways you can advocate with our community soon.

⛳☀️When you hit the greens with L'Arche Chicago - you are supporting a community where everyone belongs!

Our 12th annual golf outing will be hosted for the first time at Riverside Golf Club, set alongside the scenic Des Plaines River. Founded in 1893, the historic course features tall, majestic trees, tight fairways, and undulating fast greens.

Have you joined Noah for a museum visit?

For this month’s visit, Noah chose to celebrate Black History Month by visiting the Designing for Change: Chicago Protest Art of the 1960s–70s Exhibit at the Chicago History Museum with his House Manager, Sav. The pair bonded while making Civil Rights buttons, learning about the Chicago Freedom Movement, and enjoying deep-dish pizza-flavored chips.🏛🍕

Applications for our Summer Internship are still open! Last summer, Hannia was an intern, and she had such a blast that she’s continued to share life at L’Arche Chicago as an assistant.☀️🌳

Hannia shared, “My summer with L'Arche Chicago started because of an opportunity that I was provided by my school for an in-office internship back in the fall of 2024. After those 2 months working with the community, I knew I wanted to stay. My summer consisted of meals at St. Joseph's and other L'Arche homes, celebrating anniversaries and accomplishments, an annual house trip, and silly conversations with my roommates!

Being part of a group of students who devoted their summer to learning, growing, and bonding with core members was deeply rewarding. I was able to connect with my community, learn and receive DSP certification, and make lifelong friendships with people within and outside of our community. I feel much more connected with those I continue to share life with today, a sense of belonging, and career-ready.”

Make sure you submit your application before Friday, March 6!

Happy Black History Month!❤️💛💚

Every year, Ms. Duncan, an assistant, shares a reflection with our community to celebrate Black History Month. This year, she highlighted the impact of James Weldon Johnson and his song "Lift Every Voice and Sing".

Thank you, Ms. Duncan, for sharing and helping us celebrate Black History Month!🎉

In this cold weather, nothing beats a craft day! 🩷🎨

We are less than two weeks away from our Solidarity Brunch on Saturday, February 7, at Riverside Golf Club, and our core members are working to do their part to support our sister L’Arche communities that face daily barriers. We are so excited to include core member art and poetry in our raffle at this year’s Brunch.

⛄🌤It’s a chilly day in Chicago, but we can’t help daydreaming about our summer plans. Do you know your plans? Consider applying to our 10-week internship program. As a summer intern, you would take on the role of an assistant and share in daily life with core members (individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities) while living in one of our homes.

Over the years, our program has been a valuable experience for students in medicine, nursing, social work, psychology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, philosophy, theology, or education.

Come and see

Our mission is to celebrate the unique value of each person and to create lifelong places of belonging through our three Chicago homes that empower residents to share their gifts with their neighborhood, city, country and world.

L’Arche Chicago was founded in 2000 by Sr. Maria Zeimen when she welcomed Elbert Lott and Jean Wilson to live in community in a home on the West Side of the city. Almost twenty years later, the Chicago community continues to live together in a spirit of belonging, support and peace-making. We aim to be a sign that a more humane world is possible.

We welcome you to “come and see” the joy and magic that is L’Arche Chicago.
