Heart breaking for UVA community❤️‍🩹

This is heartbreaking. This has to STOP. Thinking of the families and loved ones of these young men. 💔

At a press conference this morning, UVA President Jim Ryan confirmed Lavel Davis Jr, D’Sean Perry, and Devin Chandler — all members of the UVA football team — were killed in Sunday night’s shooting. The players had just returned from a class trip to Washington to see a play when they were attacked as their bus pulled into a campus parking garage. The suspect has been taken into custody and charged with three counts of second degree murder. Here’s what we know about the victims so far:

Lavel Davis Jr., 20, was a third year student from Richville, South Carolina. He was a wide receiver for the University of Virginia and had been playing with the university since 2020. Davis was set to graduate in December and was the beloved first child and “role model” to his younger brother and younger sister, his father Thaddeus Davis said. “I lost my baby. This is my firstborn child,” he told NBC News. He said Davis could “light up a room just with a smile” and that his son was focused on school, football, and his family.

D’Sean Perry, 22, was a fourth year student from Miami, Florida. He was linebacker and defensive end for the UVA Cavaliers — “a do it all defender.” He played in this past Saturday’s game against Pittsburgh and made two tackles. His parents, Happy and Sean, were heartbroken by the news.

Devin Chandler, was a second year student and a wide receiver and kick returner for the Cavaliers. Before coming to UVA, Chandler was a wide receiver and kick returner at the University of Wisconsin.

So so so true.

My life was spared in so many ways this day.

This is prolly my last year of living downtown before I move to my farm. Reflecting waking up everyday seeing this building. I lived across the street from WTC for a decade+. Back in ‘08 FIDI was a whole nother game. Gotham City like. Think Smooth Criminal video. Rats, garbage & darkness. NOONE dared move that close. People were shellshocked. To me it was the cheapest option for work. My logic was my life was sparred 2ce already!

9/10/01 It was a combo of MJ’s 30th concert + fashion week + Bono’s RED charity launch with an all star marathon recording of “What’s Goin On” + the leftover MTV awards situation. even took up space w their tour. Hectic was putting it light. This was chaos.

The Roots’ hotels got lost in the sauce. So now impatience, cussin, tears, anger, “head on a platter!!!!!” Energy. stuff I never did. Almost overdid it.

I almost literally took it out on myself.

The Soho Grand accidentally (or purposely cause of an MTV award call?) gave our rooms to another band.

— I was wildin out on that Veruca (“I want a room and I want it NOW!!!!!!”)

(Prolly God to me:) “Dumbass….the universe is trying to save your life but keep it up…..”

I kept berating them.

So—of course they gave me a hotel room…….

To the World Trade Center Marriott.

So now it’s 2am & I’m at the front desk & now I have to “wait 45 mins while the system refreshes so they can find my room”

I turned into the worst version of myself.

“I’m goin home, how bout y’all find another drummer to do this show”

entitlement right? We are supposed to be assholes…..right?…..my actions won’t have consequences in the future right? Clearly this is how the successful operate & win….right?

Out the blue 3 rooms opened up at Bryant Park & now at 3am we are leaving

Next day nothing was the same.

Just 5 hrs ago i was fightin tooth n nail to sleep in a place that would result in my demise.

Life is a battle of what YOU want the plan to be VS the plan of the universe.

What’s even CRAZIER?!?!?!?———finding out 20 yrs later Riq & I were supposed to have a breakfast meeting w our manager in WTC 9am.
