At a press conference this morning, UVA President Jim Ryan confirmed Lavel Davis Jr, DโSean Perry, and Devin Chandler โ all members of the UVA football team โ were killed in Sunday nightโs shooting. The players had just returned from a class trip to Washington to see a play when they were attacked as their bus pulled into a campus parking garage. The suspect has been taken into custody and charged with three counts of second degree murder. Hereโs what we know about the victims so far:
Lavel Davis Jr., 20, was a third year student from Richville, South Carolina. He was a wide receiver for the University of Virginia and had been playing with the university since 2020. Davis was set to graduate in December and was the beloved first child and โrole modelโ to his younger brother and younger sister, his father Thaddeus Davis said. โI lost my baby. This is my firstborn child,โ he told NBC News. He said Davis could โlight up a room just with a smileโ and that his son was focused on school, football, and his family.
DโSean Perry, 22, was a fourth year student from Miami, Florida. He was linebacker and defensive end for the UVA Cavaliers โ โa do it all defender.โ He played in this past Saturdayโs game against Pittsburgh and made two tackles. His parents, Happy and Sean, were heartbroken by the news.
Devin Chandler, was a second year student and a wide receiver and kick returner for the Cavaliers. Before coming to UVA, Chandler was a wide receiver and kick returner at the University of Wisconsin.
