As many of you know, I have been an early pioneer in the Direct Primary Care world. When I started Forest DPC there were less than 50 of these clinics in the country. Now, there are thousands. None are franchises but, instead, independent free thinkers who wanted to change the way Family Medicine is delivered. With my three books, multiple lectures around the country, starting the national DPC Alliance and doing independent consulting for doctors, I like to think I have helped play a part in all of this.
I have been entertaining the thought of stepping back from clincal care to do more work in the DPC world, whether that be advising other docs or consulting in some other manner. I just needed a sign ot make this jump. I knew that sign would be finding a doctor, whom I trust, to either be my partner or take over my practice. Recently, Dr. Dan Swartz, MD found his way to my office. This doctor is exceptionally trained in Family Medicine, even working for the Mayo Clinic for years. Recently, he has been a professor in medicine at Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine and a faculty member at Lynchburg Family Medicine. Even more importantly, he gets Direct Primary Care. He has a wonderful and caring personality and impressed me so much that I realized he is the guy.
This brought me to a couple of dilemmas. The first was to decide whether our office can handle two doctors due to the size of the space. The second was whether I could help him build his practice, like I did with Dr. Anderson, while still seeing patients and also answering the call to take a bigger role in expanding DPC nationally. After a long deliberation with my family, I realized I couldn’t fulfill either of these. That made my next decision even harder. After a lot of angst and tears, I have decided that I am going to let Dr. Swartz take over my practice starting October 1, 2020.
The great news is that NOTHING will change at Forest DPC other than Dr. Swartz taking my place. His wonderful wife, Kendra, will take over Debbie’s role. Christine will stay in her same role and I will remain at Forest DPC as a patient.. That is how much I trust him.
I will also be available to him as his advisor for any questions he may have, but I really doubt he will need me. I just will no longer treat patients.
Thank you all once again for being my patients. I will not forget how you re-inspired in me the love for Family Medicine. For some, this may sound like bad news but it really is just another step in my journey of life. And remember, I wouldn’t let your care go in the hands of someone I didn’t trust 100%. That is a promise.
Above is an interview with Dr. Swartz so everyone may get to know him.
The office is taking new patients even during this transition. Just call us (434-616-2455) to schedule a time to meet us.
