Hoodoo Rootwork Correspondence Course

Hoodoo Rootwork Correspondence Course catherine yronwode's conjure course At the beginning of the year 2003, i decided to focus my teaching on a series of 52 weekly lessons.

By 2011, more than 1,700 students had enrolled in the Correspondence Course and we have formed an active and permanent Yahoo groups elist forum for discussion of hoodoo. Nothing written for this Correspondence Course will be placed online at the Lucky Mojo web site; it's a private class, sent only to people who want to study the matter in greater depth than through the web site. Both theoretical and practical matters are covered, including free magic spells, herbal information, tips on how to work with the tools of conjure, chit-chat about what it's like to be a root doctor working for clients, and a lot of inside information that is not available through my books.

Many people think of Dill merely as a flavouring for pickles, but like others in the Apiaceae or Umbelliferae family -- including Angelica, Asafoetida, Anise, Carrot, Celery, Coriander, Cumin, Fennel, Lovage, Masterwort, Parsley, Parsnip, and Sea Holly -- it is aromatic and has medicinal, magical, and culinary properties related to love and psychic abilities. Its umbrella-like flower head provides a platform and a shelter for insects, and thus its messages are: "My love is strong," "My love will strengthen you," "I will protect you," and "I am powerful against evil." I am keeping my regular Saturday office hours (1:00 PM to Midnight Pacific Time) at Hoodoo Psychics today. Call me for a quick, accurate tarot or pendulum reading or for easy-to-follow spell-casting advice. -- Miss cat, 1-888-4-HOODOO, extension 1111.

The biennial Evening Primrose or Oenethera is native to the Americas, and is not actually a Primrose or Primula at all. Native Americans prescribed it for skin diseases and it was introduced to Europe under the name King's Cure-All. Its long bloom time makes it a crucial source of nectar and pollen for moths, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Because it blooms at dusk, it is a symbol of silent love and Love at the Evening of Life. Because so many moths visit it, some say that it represents "Inconstancy," as though its popularity was somehow a fault. Thanks to my Patrons, who contribute as little as $8.00 per month for an exclusive one-year sneak-peek behind the scenes, i am able to write a new web page every week on the history of folk magic and divination. In this installment of "Where the Southern Cross the Yellow Dog," we gain wisdom from a collection of hoodoo beliefs and practices published in 1894. The material comes from the memory of Ruby Andrews Moore, the racist granddaughter of a white enslaver -- and despite the author's ugly attitude, it provides us with a clear view of the conjure beliefs of Black Americans in the Georgia Sea Islands before the Civil War. As always, i take care to unpack the antiquated terminology, correct any errors, and offer insights into the life and times of the author.

This illustrated and annotated web page describes rural African-American omens, divination, and spell-work in the 19th century. Copies of the original article accompany the text.

The Southern Spirits web site includes material about hoodoo gathered from old books, magazine articles, newspapers, and fragments extracted from novels and short stories, annotated with interpretive and comparative notes. If you are not yet familiar with the public portion of the site, check it out!

The Fir is a coniferous evergreen tree in the genus Abies, which is part of the larger Pine family, the Pinaceae. Fir trees tend to be conical, with a single trunk and downward-drooping branches and needles when young, but as they age they may develop flattened crowns and increasing asymmetry due to environmental factors. Firs often grow in mountainous areas, where their shape helps them shed the weight of Winter snow. Their lumber is widely used in construction, and they are said to symbolize Strength, Constancy, Time, and Immortality. The Pink Spotted Rockrose is a cross between the White Spotted Rockrose (Cistus ladanifer, native to Spain, Portugal and North Africa) and the Pink Rockrose (Cistus creticus, native to Crete and Israel). Glandular hairs on the leaf surfaces exude a fragrant resin called labdanum. Many believe it to be the "Balm of Gilead" in the Bible, for Cistus grows in the ancient territory of Gilead. It may also have been an ingredient in ketoret, the sacred Jewish temple incense. The symbolism of the Pink-Spotted Rockrose is Adaptability and Resilience. Hello everyone, and thank you for supporting "It's All Ephemera"!

This week in "Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo" my Patrons are going to get a newly illustrated and annotated transcription from my collection of 20th century blues lyrics about rootwork and conjure.

Today we travel back to 1926 to listen to Elizabeth Smith sing "Gwine to Have Bad Luck for Seven Years" -- an oddball vaudeville blues about the consequences of breaking a mirror and sitting in the thirteenth row of pews in church. The page includes a non-biography of the ultra-obscure Miss Smith, her only known portrait, a label shot, a bonus photo and mini-biography of the famous jazz lyricist Andy Razaf, who wrote the song, and an MP3 audio file so you can sing along. This project is being previewed by my patrons, who have a one year advance exclusive on every week's new web page, in gratitude for their financial support of my work as a documentarian of folklore, folk magic, and divination.

[THE SECRET URL IS SENT TO PATRONS VIA EMAIL]

The Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo site is here:
http://luckymojo.com/blues.html

-- and when you get there, you will see a placard announcing this week's new page ... but you can't click on it unless you are a Patron, because it is for Patrons only ... until February 21st, 2027.

After a year for my Patrons to enjoy, this material will be linked from the public-facing pages of the Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo site. In the meantime, my Patrons also have access to exclusive threads at the Lucky Mojo Forum and participate in discussions with me about my ongoing publications.

To support me on Patreon and make my new web pages possible, please go to "It's All Ephemera," where you can read my update posts and sign on as a Patron for just $8.00 per month -- four weekly pages at a mere $2.00 each. Your support keeps me writing, and i thank everyone who has helped me with this source of funding since January 2021 at
