Medetomidine is now more common than Tranq (Xylazine) in Philadelphia’s street opioid supply, and of course, more potent.
When patients overdose on a combination of opioids and medetomidine, providing naloxone (Narcan) will help individuals start breathing again but does not reverse the sedation caused by the medetomidine.
An emergency physician and nurse scientist explain what medetomidine is and how to respond if someone is overdosing on it.

ADAD specializes in creating onsite drug and alcohol testing programs to help employers maintain safe working environments and comply with state and federal laws. We customize and implement testing policies for industries ranging from transportation and construction to manufacturing and retail. We also offer resources and testing for individuals and families.
ADAD provides drug and alcohol program consultation, administration, and back-up record keeping services. Our clients rely upon our expertise for accidents, audits, and unemployment compensation hearings. Our drug and alcohol policy ensures compliance with all federal and state regulations, and includes customization for company-specific provisions. The federally mandated substance abuse recognition training for supervisors is included in our services. An optional presentation for employees regarding the policy guidelines is included in our services as well. Test kits are provided for accidents (for local and over-the-road drivers) or as an option for employees with varying schedules.
ADAD offers onsite and nearsite testing planned around your company’s schedule. Time spent waiting at the clinic is time lost at work, and onsite testing eliminates this issue. Our company’s protocol and supervisor training significantly reduces the possibility of substitutions and adulterations of specimens, which is difficult to avoid with offsite collection facilities.
ADAD collectors are specifically trained in DOT/FMCSA regulation knowledge. This ensures any questions an employer has are answered onsite immediately, and all regulatory requirements and company policies are followed precisely. This is crucial for “eventful” collections.
Most of our CDL tests are reported to the employer by the end of the next business day. CDL drivers cannot legally drive as a new hire until the negative drug and alcohol results are documented by the employer, so ADAD understands the importance of prompt test result notification. Non-negative tests require more time for additional testing.
For non-CDL testing, ADAD offers a “Rapid 12”, which provides instant results, and includes commonly abused medications in addition to illegal drug use. For positive results or issues, ADAD representatives offer guidance through the protocol and can help plan a course of action with the employee. Hair, premises, and sweat patch testing options are available as well.
