Happy Friday, Raiders!

Have you ever wondered about what supplements might work for you? Have you wondered why medical providers often tell you to (P)RICE your injuries? Have you wondered what to do after resting and icing have done their work?

Your 1SBCT Athletic Trainer, Brittany Hoover, has some answers for you. Find them at these links:

Raiders, today we focus on another piece of the foundation: the squat. It’s a fundamental part of fitness and of our jobs as tactical athletes. Ankle mobility contributes a lot to the squat, so there’s a bit of discussion and testing of ankle mobility as well.

Basic test: get into a good squat position, see how long you can stay there - can you make it to ten minutes???

This is how you perform the Y balance test - or at least my “modified for home” version. I used tape and a book. The goal is to push the book as far as you can, hands on your hips, and still be able to return to a balanced position. Do each direction with each leg 3 times, and average your scores. If you have a big difference side to side, work on the weak side! If you think this is really hard on both sides, train both!

This is the layout of the Y balance test - doing it with tape is not how the original test was designed, but it is simple and cheap and is easy to set up at home. I used painter’s tape to keep the floor from getting sticky residue, and a carpenter’s square to get the angles right.

Raiders, today we’re focusing on balance, as part of our “build your foundation” series. Facebook is a little bit clunky, so I can’t add all the videos and pictures to one post. The video attached the this post shows a way to train and test balance progressions.

Double leg, tandem stance, single leg, in that order. Tested for 30 seconds x 4 conditions: eyes open on a hard surface, eyes closed on a hard surface, eyes open on a soft surface, and finally eyes closed on a soft surface. If you can’t hit those benchmarks, practice until you can! The next video shows a more dynamic balance assessment called the Y-Balance Test.
