What to do for 2026? Wow, these years seem to fly by faster and faster. I hope you got those calendars ready for 2026. Let’s help those caregivers be more prepared for those family moments. This can be everything for everyone.
I know it is a lot to just think about your loved one and how to take care of them but take a moment to reflect and think about those that share in the lives of our loved ones beyond family. The daily care and love that is given when we are not around. Spread a little love and recognize those that give their love to those they care for. It is a task that not many can do and they do it every day. All I can say is you who love on our loved ones are a special kind of Blessing!
I thank you with all my heart and from a place of humbleness because I know what you do is above and beyond with love and patience.
Let’s let your loved one show some love. Maybe they want to give the gift of love with something simple like some candy or a card. Let them express the ability to show their love and gratitude to those they see every day.

The air is crisp and it is windy outside. The days are shorter and the daylight is, well who knows where? Our loved ones are starting hibernation but please keep them active. Let’s help out those busy caregivers and get involve, stay in touch with our loved ones needs. We make life important to those that we call family! There are so many things we can do to keep that blood from stagnating. In the past I have talked about one of those under the desk bicycle for seniors. Look it up and give them the gift of exercise and movement.
I really hope that you are getting them ready to spend time with family over the Christmas holiday. So much food, fun and family to be had by one and all!!! May this time bring you and yours a joy fill time and reflection on what is important in this season of life.

How do you feel the year went for your loved one? Did you do all you wanted to with them or for them? Did you get them in a place of peace and joy?

We can’t always get them in a joyful place and I am sure that if you are reading these posts you are doing all you can. I feel like you love, hug, listen, share, and just be there you are doing what you can. I want to congratulate you on being an amazing person, family member or even friend. We are not always in a place where we can give all that they need but you are trying and loving them, that is what is important at this stage of life.
Get those calendars bought for next year and start with events and visits, so that they have something to look forward too. Posting them in their rooms will help the daily caregivers remind them and get them ready for your visits or events. Let this be your gift to them a life to look forward to with YOU!

“Value and Legacy”
Thoughtful reflections in 2025
I was wondering? What do I have in my mind that is valuable to those around me or what is the legacy I am leaving behind.
My kids told me recently that I am the matriarch of the family. What does that mean to me and to them. I ponder what to pass on to them and what those that have gone before me, passed on to me. Some things are passed on by actions we do or event we create and others are what we say and teach them.
All my parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles are gone. My sibs and I are the current legacy to our family.
What can we do, to first off, letting those know that they are valuable and that they contain a plethora of information to leave as a legacy. How do we show them that they are important and will not be forgotten? These things are tough to do these days because we are all so busy just trying to figure out how our current life in this world.
I have written a letter to my kids to let them know I love them and that they ALL matter because we all do plain and simple. Love is not conditional or given and taken away at will. Despite differences, these are the days we come together and love on one another because we ALL have value and a legacy to pass on.
Love your loved one and ask them how they see their legacy and anything special they want to pass on. Getting them to open up about these things may be tough but if we share with them, hopefully they can pass on something never expected and could change someone for a life time to come.
I know that we all may not be able to communicate with our loved ones but at least trying and sharing their value, in that brief moment they may take that in.

I want to take a moment and share about our home and what it means to our loved ones.
When I say our loved ones, I mean everyone that comes to stay with us, be it long or short term, they become our family. We share our lives and our hearts every day.
We have 8 rooms, both single and shared so that they are affordable and can meet those tight budgets. We work with whatever financial outcomes you are currently trying to deal with but I stress that this is based on availability.
We can have a hard conversation with you and hopefully give you options that might fit your loved ones needs. We might not be able to house your loved one but hopefully direct you in the right way to ease your mind and be able to seek out the right place for them.

We want to see everyone that stays with us or not, have the best life possible.

Time to change the décor? Take your loved one out and about to gather some leaves to create a beautiful wreath for fall.
So easy to do! Go to your favorite craft store and get a Styrofoam wreath and a bit of glue and let them express their self. Hang their creation in their space or take it home and share it with the family. Take a picture with everyone around their work and share it with them and let them know how you and the family are enjoying it.
The little moments to share with them during these fall days is so important. They are not getting that natural vitamin D from the outdoors so take every chance you can to give them that emotional and Vit D boost!! Keep those spirits up and spread the joy. Can you share this with someone close to them and make it a project to share?

“Keeping it Interesting”

Do you play cards or board games with you loved one? Simple games can keep their minds active. Short things like go fish or Memory Card games. You can do a short internet search to find game that might be suitable for playing within your loved one’s ability. Set a timer to play 5 minutes and do a check in because you do not want them getting frustrated or overwhelmed. Then switch to something else. We want to give them a mind workout but not a mind overload.
I also want to remind everyone that our hands are very important as we get older. I have talked about hand yoga before, and I am sure I will talk about it again because in my mind a little time makes a huge difference. Let’s get whatever exercise in that we can when we can. Do a simple search on exercises for the elderly and you will find so many. Pick what will work for you and your loved one! I know that some places have these things but our loved ones might be in that place of privacy and do not want to participant until they are more comfortable with their new living space.

When placing our loved ones what are the questions you should be thinking to ask?
Think first, NO question is a silly one. This is where you want to make sure you ask whatever you need, to be comfortable for your loved one to live.
What do they have for exercise to keep your loved one mobile?
What do they do to provide proper meals that meet whatever your loved one’s needs are now and into the future? At this time of life their meal needs might change.
What do they provide as far as extra’s like depends and cleaning supplies, as they potentially become incontinent?
Hours you are able to remove them for outings if you choose to take them out and about?
How often should we think about meeting with the care team?
How often do they do outings and can you attend?
What is the difference between private room vs semi private?
Can they start out in one kind of a room and be moved if it becomes an issue?
Financial assistance, what do they accept and do they have resources where you can seek out additional help to cover daily cost and additional expenses?
What could come up in the future that we should think about now, as they decline?
How do they get to and from appointment like Doctors or Eye Care?
How do they handle emergencies?
Do they notify families of upcoming events?
Remember this is the end of life care for you loved one and we need to be present and aware of their needs.
These are only some of the questions but never be afraid to contact and ask any question that might come up. You need to feel comfortable as does your loved one.

Looking and deciding when and where to find a proper place for our loved one.
These are hard times and struggling with the care and cost of care of a loved one influence our decisions. For some, doing the research early and talking with the doctors about the expectation of decline of our loved one can be hard.
Have you had an honest talk with your loved one to prepare them for what to expect and what they would like to see in that process of transition. We have to remember that this is their life as well. As much as we can or cannot take care of them it is important to include them in this decision and do it early before they decline to the point of not knowing. This can put them into stressful situation that can be hard on them and you.
Early conversations can do 2 things
1. Give you peace of mind as to their wishes
2. Prepares you with parameters and possible costs as to what is doable and that it meets their current needs now and into the future.

“Pool Time”
Thoughtful reflections in 2025

Not sure about you but I think we have had good weather this month so far. It reminds me to get those out and about before the long winters nap.
Have you thought about signing them up for something like Silver Sneakers/One Pass, through Medicare? Basically, it is a fitness programs for seniors. It gives you access to the pool and or gym for your loved one. Maybe they have weekly exercise class that we can do with our loved one or take them to the pool for a little walk about. I go to my local city pool and they have a lazy river that I do and see others like me wanting to keep fit with low impact exercise. Check in with their doctor and see what level you can start them on. Keeping them active through the long winter is so important for mind, body and soul. We got this for them!
