U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week (USAAW) is observed each year from November 18-24. The purpose of the observance is to raise awareness of the importance of appropriate antibiotic and antifungal use, and the threat antimicrobial resistance poses to people, animals, plants and their shared environment.

Carefully monitoring antibiotic prescribing and use is critical to effectively treating infections and protecting patients from becoming resistant to vital medications. At Northern Maine Medical Center, our Infection Control Department and Pharmacies work daily with our patients and providers to ensure patient wellbeing is top priority and to execute proper medication and antibiotic prescription.

Northern Maine Medical Center is proud to receive a generous donation from the Madawaska Owls athletes, raised during their fundraising game this fall to benefit the Edgar J. Paradis Cancer Fund.

On behalf of NMMC, Alain Bois, Chief Operating Officer, accepted the check from Lucas Pelletier. We are deeply grateful for the Owls’ thoughtfulness and community spirit. Their support helps ensure that patients and families in our region continue to receive the compassionate care and assistance they rely on through the Edgar J. Paradis Fund.

Thank you to everyone who took part in making this event such a success — your kindness truly makes a difference!

Throughout this month, Northern Maine Medical Center will be sharing a multi-part series on how to better understand and manage diabetes — because awareness, education, and support can make all the difference in living a healthy life.

Managing diabetes is a long-term commitment. While it may feel routine sometimes, staying on top of your medications and maintaining regular check-ups are absolutely crucial — for several key reasons:

Why it matters:

Diabetes is more than just a blood-sugar number. It can quietly affect your heart, kidneys, eyes, nerves, circulation and more. Treating only when you feel something wrong leaves risks un-checked.

Medications — whether insulin, oral agents, or other supportive therapies — help keep your blood sugar (and other linked risks like blood pressure or cholesterol) in safe ranges. Missing doses or drifting off schedule can undo progress and accelerate complications.

Regular check-ups give your care team a chance to monitor for early signs of trouble (like kidney changes, nerve issues, retinal changes). Early detection = better outcomes.

Check-ups also serve as a reminder, a reset: Are your medications still right? Are there side effects or new issues? Is your lifestyle still aligned (diet, physical activity, stress, sleep)?

Staying engaged builds a stronger partnership with your primary care or internal medicine provider — you’re not just reacting, you’re preventing. We have appointments available in Fort Kent and Madawaska to best serve you!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Northern Maine Medical Center Launches COMPASS Telemedicine Service to Enhance Local Access to Specialist Care

Fort Kent, ME – November 12, 2025 – Northern Maine Medical Center (NMMC) is proud to announce the launch of COMPASS, a cutting-edge telemedicine platform designed to bring specialized medical expertise directly to the bedside of patients in our community. We are thrilled to bring Critical Care and Pulmonology to Fort Kent now, with the addition of Neurology and Cardiology in 2026! This innovative service aims to enhance local access to high-quality care, reducing the need for patients to travel to receive vital care.

What is COMPASS?

COMPASS (Comprehensive Patient Assessment & Specialist Support) leverages advanced telehealth technology to connect patients with board-certified specialists in various fields, including Critical Care and Pulmonology that will be available at Northern Maine Medical Center’s inpatient units and Emergency Room. Through secure video consultations, patients can receive expert evaluations and treatment plans without leaving the comfort of their local hospital.

Key Benefits of COMPASS:

• Local Access to Specialist Care: Patients can consult with specialists without the need for long-distance travel, ensuring timely and convenient care.
• Enhanced Continuity of Care: Local healthcare providers can collaborate seamlessly with specialists, ensuring comprehensive and coordinated treatment plans.
• Cost-Effective Solution: By reducing the need for patient transfers and out-of-town referrals, COMPASS helps manage healthcare costs while maintaining high-quality care standards.
A Commitment to Rural Healthcare

“At Northern Maine Medical Center, we are committed to providing our community with the best possible care,” said Jeff Zewe, President and CEO of NMMC, “With COMPASS, we are breaking down geographical barriers and ensuring that our patients have access to the specialized care they deserve, right here at home”.

Several departments across Northern Maine Medical Center recently collaborated with the Fort Kent Fire Department, Fort Kent Police Department, Aroostook County Emergency Management Agency, U.S. Border Patrol, Maine Forest Service, and representatives from the University of Maine at Fort Kent to conduct an emergency preparedness exercise.

This training focused on a hypothetical incident at the university and allowed all partners to review and strengthen workflows—from patient safety and response coordination to communication practices.

Exercises like these are vital to ensuring our community is ready to respond effectively and collaboratively in the event of an emergency. We’re proud to work alongside our local and regional partners to keep our community safe and prepared.

Throughout this month, Northern Maine Medical Center will be sharing a multi-part series on how to better understand and manage diabetes — because awareness, education, and support can make all the difference in living a healthy life

Regular physical activity is one of the most effective ways to manage — and even prevent — diabetes. Exercise helps lower blood sugar, improves how your body uses insulin, supports heart health, and boosts overall energy and mood. Even small changes, like taking a daily walk, gardening, or stretching, can make a big difference over time!

Here are a few tips to stay active safely:

💪 Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate activity most days of the week.
🩵 Choose activities you enjoy — walking, swimming, dancing, or biking.
🩴 Wear proper footwear and stay hydrated.
📅 Listen to your body and start slow if you’re new to exercise.

At Northern Maine Medical Center, we understand that sometimes pain, stiffness, or injury can make it hard to stay active. That’s why our Outpatient Therapy Services is here to help! Our skilled therapists can work with you to improve mobility, build strength, and create a plan to help you safely return to the activities you love.
