MRI BASICS

This is an MRI of the lumbar spine (lower back). I explain to my patients that MRIs are like photography that allows us to see deep into the body. As with photography, there are different types of cameras, exposures, and photographers. When imaging the spine with an MRI camera quality is measured in Tesla. We need at least a 1.5 Tesla magnet in a closed scanner to appropriately visualize all the different tissues of the spine.

This image was done with a 3.0 Tesla magnet and the image quality is very good.
