Pumping of the Rib Heads

This is an extremely effective technique for clients presenting with rib head subluxation or general stiffness of the thoracic cage.

By improving mobility at the costovertebral joints, we can significantly influence overall thoracic function and rotational capacity.

This becomes especially important for rotational athletes—particularly in sports like golf—where thoracic mobility plays a critical role in performance. If we can restore even one degree of motion per rib, we can potentially create up to 24 degrees of additional rotation through the thoracic spine.

When combined with Rib ELDOA techniques and the Global Postural Stretch for the thoracic cage, this approach becomes a powerful system for restoring mobility, improving mechanics, and enhancing performance.

The Sørensen Back Extension Test

The Sørensen Back Extension Test (also known as the Biering–Sørensen Test) is an isometric endurance test used to evaluate the strength and endurance of the posterior chain.

In this test, the client holds the upper body parallel to the ground while prone, creating an isometric contraction through the lower back, glutes, and spinal stabilizers.

This test is widely used in both performance and rehabilitation settings to assess back endurance and to help identify individuals who may be at a higher risk for low back pain. Research suggests that hold times below approximately 176–198 seconds may indicate reduced back endurance and a greater likelihood of future low back issues.

In this video, I demonstrate how to properly perform and assess the test, along with key coaching points to ensure correct positioning and activation.

This is an excellent technique for opening the posterior aspect of the cervical spine, influencing both the soft tissue structures and the joints.

I particularly like using this technique with clients who present with forward head posture, as it can be an effective way to begin restoring more normal length–tension relationships in the cervical region.

When applied correctly, it can help improve mobility, reduce restriction, and set the foundation for better postural alignment.

Our Story

Don’t just be strong. Be healthy. We have an analytical approach to fitness that starts with the person you are and the life you want for yourself.

H3 is a product of Dan Hellman’s vision to create a way for people of all ages to be fit, happy, healthy and injury-resistant. As a physical therapist educated in an osteopathic environment, Dan is concerned with how the entire body performs and how the different parts of the body work together. He believes that people can be active and happy well into old age with the proper strategies for wellness.

Dan started H3 in 1999 in a public gym in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In 2004, H3 moved to a beautiful beachside location at The Tides at Bridgeside Square, where it continues to operate today just steps from the Atlantic Ocean.

Today, H3 is one of only seven schools in the world affiliated with the Soma Training and Soma Therapy Association (SASA). It is an official training center for Soma Training and Soma Therapy, the revolutionary techniques and treatments developed by Guy VOYER, DO.
