World Pneumonia Day: Safe Use of Humidifiers & Vaporizers
Pneumonia is a serious lung infection caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi, and it can lead to symptoms like cough, fever, chills, chest pain, and difficulty breathing. On World Pneumonia Day, we’re highlighting ways to protect your lungs — starting with prevention. Pneumonia vaccines are available and can help reduce your risk, especially for older adults and those with chronic conditions. Ask our pharmacists if you qualify.
If you’re using a humidifier or vaporizer to ease breathing symptoms, be sure to use them safely. These devices can help keep airways moist, but only when properly maintained. Use distilled or demineralized water, clean the tank daily, and disinfect weekly to prevent mold and bacteria buildup. Avoid over-humidifying your space — aim for indoor humidity between 30–50%. And never add essential oils or medications unless the device is designed for it. Safe use supports respiratory health and helps reduce the risk of infections like pneumonia.

Did you know pharmacists can help you adjust your medication routine for daylight savings time?
Now that Daylight Saving Time has ended for the year, your body — and your medication routine — may need a little help adjusting. Earlier sunsets can affect your sleep, mood, and energy levels, so try to embrace natural light during the day or use a light therapy lamp if sunlight is limited. Give yourself time to ease into the new rhythm, eat more vitamin D-rich foods, and stay active to support your internal clock. And here’s something many people don’t realize: pharmacists can help you adjust your medication schedule safely. Timing matters for medications like insulin, thyroid treatments, and blood pressure pills — especially when your daily routine shifts. Stop by and let us help you feel your best this season.

Weekly Pharmacy Fact: First College of Pharmacy in US
The first college of pharmacy in the United States was founded in 1821 as the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and was the first institution in the United States dedicated solely to pharmaceutical education. It was established by a group of apothecaries who wanted to improve standards in the profession and ensure proper training for those preparing and dispensing medications.
This groundbreaking college laid the foundation for modern pharmacy education, emphasizing scientific rigor, ethical practice, and public health. It later became part of the University of the Sciences, which merged with Saint Joseph’s University in 2022.
