State of Florida: How are we doing with to***co control?
Not so well
Florida needs to do better with helping people quit smoking, funding medications like varenicline (Chantix) and eliminating menthol and other flavored ci******es.

American Lung Association State of To***co Control

Ask President Biden to Remove Menthol Ci******es and Flavored Ci**rs from the Market
Removing menthol ci******es and several flavored ci**rs from the marketplace will prevent many kids from starting to smoke and promote quitting, especially among Black Americans. These actions have the potential to save millions of lives and protect a generation of kids from starting this deadly addiction.

In 2022, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued proposed rules to end the sale of menthol ci******es and flavored ci**rs.The Lung Association has urged FDA to remove all flavored to***co products, including menthol ci******es, and welcomes these proposed rules as an important step forward in reducing to***co use and addressing to***co-related health disparities.

The Bottom line: Ending the sale of menthol ci******es and flavored ci**rs will prevent many kids from starting to smoke and promote quitting, especially among Black Americans. These actions have the potential to save millions of lives.

Please take a moment to send a letter to President Biden to urge him to move forward quickly with issuing final rules that will end the sale of these deadly products.

In case you missed it: the American Lung Association has released its yearly State of To***co Control report. It's available at Lung.org/SOTC. See if your state made the grade.

Thank you for advocating to protect our nation’s health from to***co use by taking action.

What You Should Know About Radon
January is National Radon Action Month, so we're raising awareness about radon, the 86th element in the periodic table and the second-leading cause of lung cancer.

What is radon?
It's a naturally occurring radioactive gas emitted from the ground.

How can you protect yourself and your family?
Radon is odorless and colorless, so the only way to detect it in your home or business is to test the air.

FLU SHOTS ARE HERE!
Vaccination: An Important Step in Protecting Health

Patients with chronic lung conditions, like COPD and asthma, need to take extra steps to manage their condition and ensure the healthiest possible future. One important step that may not always be top of mind is vaccination, which can protect against common preventable diseases that may be very serious for those with respiratory conditions. CDC recommends adults with COPD, asthma, and other lung diseases get an annual flu vaccine, as well as stay up to date with pneumococcal and other recommended vaccines. Additional vaccines may be indicated based on age, job, travel locations, and lifestyle. If you have patients with chronic lung diseases, make sure they have all the vaccines they need to protect their health. As part of National Immunization Awareness Month, the CDC has the latest recommended adult immunization schedule, as well as resources to support implementation of practice standards and patient education. A DISASTER WAITING TO HAPPEN:
the Department of Transportation “abandoned plans to require truck drivers and train engineers to be screened for sleep apnea,” which “has been blamed for a number of crashes.” DOT said that, in the words of CBS, “existing safety programs already address the issue.” Regulators said that railroads and trucking companies should be one the ones to decide on testing. The Washington Post (8/8, Halsey) casts the move as part of the Trump Administration’s “quest to relieve industries of regulatory burdens.” Advocates for testing denounced the decision. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) spokesman Christopher O’Neil, in the words of the Post, said the panel “is disappointed by the decision,” and Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-NY) said, “This abrupt and uncalled-for withdrawal by USDOT commemorates a disaster waiting to happen.”

What's the implication? We've seen horrible, fatal, potentially avoidable accidents from undiagnosed, untreated sleep apnea,
The public deserves to be protected from this problem by strict monitoring and regulation

Another reason to watch your diet:
The Journal of Clinical Oncology found that “people who ate the most total fat and saturated fat were 14 percent more likely to get lung malignancies” compared to individuals on low-fat diets. The “researchers examined data from 10 previously published studies in the United States, Europe and Asia that looked at how dietary fat intake influences the odds of lung malignancies.” Study co-author Danxia Yu of Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, said, “Specifically, our findings suggest that increasing polyunsaturated fat intake while reducing saturated fat intake, especially among smokers and recent quitters, may (help prevent) not only cardiovascular disease but also lung cancer.” However, the study did not track how participants’ eating habits changed and did not account for sugar and trans fats, both of which may also contribute to cancer.
