The one productivity hack that actually works for ADHD brains (and why everything else you've tried has failed).
Before my diagnosis, I thought productivity meant doing more things at once - multitasking, juggling projects, keeping all the plates spinning.
I was expelled from middle school because I couldn't keep up with the chaos I was creating.
Even after my diagnosis and treatment, I still fell into the trap of thinking I needed to optimize my way into superhuman productivity with apps, systems, and "life hacks."
Here's what actually changed everything: I stopped trying to do more and started doing ONE thing at a time with my full attention.
Not because it sounds nice - because the neuroscience is clear: your ADHD brain literally cannot sustain attention across multiple tasks without massive cognitive cost.
Every time you switch tasks, you're losing up to 23 minutes of deep focus as your brain reorients.
For someone with ADHD, that switching cost is even higher because our executive function is already working overtime.
So here's the framework I use every single day (and teach every driven professional I work with):
âś… Pick The ONE Thing
Identify the single task that, if completed, would make everything else easier or unnecessary. Not your to-do list. Not your top 3. ONE thing.
The question I ask myself: "What's the ONE thing I can do such that by doing it, everything else becomes easier or unnecessary?"
âś… Block 90 Minutes (Not 8 Hours)
Your ADHD brain can't sustain 8 hours of superfocus - that's fantasy. Block 60 minutes max. This is realistic and achievable, which means you'll actually do it.
I schedule these blocks like appointments with myself. Non-negotiable.
âś… Eliminate All Switching Costs
Turn off notifications. Close all tabs except what you need for that ONE thing. Put your phone in another room if you have to.
Every open tab, every notification, every "I'll just check this real quick" is stealing 23 minutes of focus from you.
âś… Use The "Not Now" Redirect
When your brain screams "but what about—" you say "not now, that's not the one thing."
You're not saying no forever. You're saying "not during this 90 minutes." This satisfies your brain's need to capture the thought without derailing your focus.
This isn't about willpower or discipline - it's about working WITH your ADHD brain instead of against it.
I use this approach in my practice every single day, and I teach it to every client who's been told they just need to "try harder" or "get organized."
The truth? You don't need 47 productivity apps.
You need to understand how your brain actually works and stop fighting it.
Do it now. Do it right. Do the hard part first - but only do ONE thing.
That's the whole game.
