For patients with Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) who cannot take long-term blood thinners, the WATCHMAN procedure offers a minimally invasive way to help reduce the risk of stroke. Today we celebrate more than 550 patients at Holy Cross Health who have benefited from this treatment.

Performed in our state-of-the-art electrophysiology lab, most patients enjoy a short overnight stay before returning home the next day. Understanding your options for AFib can help you take an active role in protecting your heart and long-term health.

We're pleased to welcome Dr. Nadia Isabel Abelhad, MD, FACC to the Holy Cross Medical Group, bringing patients expanded access to preventative and diagnostic heart care.

Her clinical focus includes cardiometabolic health, lipid optimization, plaque prevention, cardio-obstetrics, pre-eclampsia, and cardio-oncology. She also offers diagnostic testing such as echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, SPECT, and PET imaging.

Dr. Abelhad is seeing patients at 4725 N. Federal Highway, Suite #401, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33308, and is accepting new patients.

Cardinal Gibbons High School Fort Lauderdale, FL students joined us for the Healing Hands: Nurse Shadow Experience, beginning their day in the chapel with guidance from our Mission Leader and our Chief Nursing Officer, who helped them focus on purpose before stepping into the clinical world.

Throughout the day, students spent time with nurses from IRU, PACU, the OR, Cath Lab, Endoscopy and 4 West, getting a firsthand look at the skills and teamwork behind quality care. They also visited, NICU, Lab, Pharmacy, CIU, and Physical Therapy, where teams set up interactive stations, microscopes, medication education, sterile trays, therapy activities and a safe cardiac monitoring demonstration.

Thank you to every department and colleague who welcomed these students and helped them explore what a bright future in healthcare can look like.

Honoring Our November Colleague of the Month: Millie Cruz Arellano

We are proud to celebrate Millie, Lead Medical Assistant at our Lighthouse Point Medical Office. Over the last two months, she has taken on new responsibilities with positivity, courage, and a genuine commitment to her team.

Her colleagues shared: “She has bravely ventured beyond her comfort zone, tackling new challenges and discovering innovative solutions to various issues, ranging from patient concerns to staff and physician collaboration, all while excelling in her primary role as a lead Medical Assistant.”

Millie’s willingness to learn, support others, and step in wherever she is needed has made a meaningful difference at Lighthouse Point. Her hard work, teamwork, and dedication embody the values of Holy Cross Health, and we are truly grateful for her.

The Wilton Manors office, led by Dr. Ceavers and Dr. Gioia, is the HCMH H-Cup Award recipient, earning a 96% score from 777 patient surveys collected over the rolling six months.

Patients consistently share positive feedback about their experiences at this office, describing the team as warm, caring, helpful, and attentive. These comments reflect the dedication of Dr. Ceavers, Dr. Gioia, and the entire staff to creating a welcoming and supportive environment.

A few comments shared by patients include:

•"I am very impressed with Dr Ceavers. In fact, I realized that he is out of network for me, but I am willing to pay more to see him anyway because he is that good of a physician."

The Dorothy Mangurian Women's Center welcomed more than 100 attendees for the 3rd Annual Food is Medicine Symposium, focused on advancing health through nutrition. Sponsored by Holy Cross Community Health & Well-Being, the South Florida Hunger Coalition, and the Florida Health & Nutrition Coalition, the event featured Oakland Park Mayor, Tim Lonergan, Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian of Tufts University, Holly Freishtat of the Milken Institute, and more than 30 experts in food policy and nutrition.

A highlight was the Culinary Medicine Masterclass, opened by City Commissioner Gordon and led by Olivia Thomas, RD, where participants prepared healthy, culturally relevant meals that support chronic disease prevention.
