After Family Visits During The Holidays Senior Care Requests Rise
For adult children with aging parents, spending time together around the holidays can bring attention to changes in lifestyle or behavior that might indicate that a senior needs assistance at home.
For those who provide senior care, the weeks immediately following the holidays tend to
be the busiest of the year as families work to arrange care for aging loved ones. January is the highest volume month for new inquiries related to senior care.
Families who have recently spent time with aging loved ones should consider these
factors when deciding whether it is time to engage a senior care provider.
* Mood. Was a senior loved one acting different around the holidays this year? Was
he or she less talkative or more emotional?
* Physical appearance. Did mom or dad lose a significant amount of weight since
your last visit? Did they appear to be keeping up with personal hygiene?
* Social life and routine. Did an aging relative mention socializing with neighbors
and friends? Do he or she seem to be interested in making plans and getting out and about?
* Household. During holiday visits, was their home clean and orderly? Have they fallen
behind on paying bills, refilling medications, or housework?
* Food choices. Did they have nutritious food at home, or was the refrigerator
empty because they can't make it to the grocery store?

For many older adults, help with everyday tasks such as meal preparation, light housekeeping and medication reminders can allow them to stay safe and healthy at home.

Healthy eating guidelines to follow as we age. Studies have shown that a healthy nutritional diet lowers the risk of osteoporosis, diabetes, heart disease and stroke.
The ageing process causes the body to absorb less of the healthy nutrients that are necessary. Certain medications have side effects that cause loss of appetite, smell and taste. Chewing and digestion are diminished also. We must choose foods carefully in order to make up for the loss nutrition.
Avoid empty calorie foods that are considered bad carbs. These foods have refined sugar, white flour or white rice. Particularly, sodas, chips and packaged foods considered convenience foods, as they contain no vitamins, minerals and nutrients.
We should eat a variety of nutrient-rich foods and plenty of fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables. Eating foods with protein such as; eggs, cheese, cooked beans, nuts, seeds, peanut butter, fish, poultry and lean meat is essential for good nutritional health.
Vitamin D and calcium are needed for daily nutrition. Eat these foods milk, yogurt, and cheese, spinach, kale, collard greens and tofu as they are all high in vitamin D and calcium. High fiber foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and cooked beans should be eaten.
The body produces less gastric acid and absorbs less vitamin B12 after the age of 50. We need vitamin B12 to keep our blood and nerves vital. Vitamin B12 is found in eggs, fish, poultry, meat and milk.
Drink plenty of fluids.

Hope, Support and Healing
How we can offer hope and support in order to assist healing in advance of and after, a medical procedure.
Fear, anxiety, frustration, hope, excitement and more are the gamut of feelings that are elicited by individuals because of medical procedures and recovery periods. It is important to allow the individual to express their feelings in order to support and understand them.
It is important to make a plan and to help the patient know what to expect after the procedure and who will be assisting.
The patient will need help with household chores, shopping for food or having meals delivered.
It is always good to plan a visit and schedule a time that is agreeable to all.
Lifting the patients spirits is also accomplished by having a familiar face or close friends visit when possible.
Each recovery period is unique to the individual. Encourage the patient to take their time returning to being well again.
