Denise S. Marchesani

Denise Marchesani passed away unexpectedly, yet peacefully, on Monday March 30th with her loving family at her side. Her life was defined by her kindness, strength and unwavering commitment to family. She made it her greatest priority to raise and nurture her children. She will be remembered for her selflessness, her perseverance and courage, and the deep love she freely gave.

Born August 31,1950 to Margaret and Peter Smith of Mt. Kisco, NY, Denise grew up in Kisco Park surrounded by her Murphy clan of grandparents, aunts and uncles and many cousins. Alongside were neighbors including the Guidas, the Trottas and the Reynolds families who remained lifelong friends. Her Smith relatives of grandparents, aunts and uncles and many cousins, heralding from the Bronx, Westchester County, and New Jersey, surrounding her on childhood holidays and at Sound Beach Long Island.

Denise graduated from Horace Greeley High School, Roger Williams College and received her Masters from Western Connecticut State University. She was an elementary school teacher in the Mahopac School District for many years; known, admired and awarded for her outstanding artistic talent.

Denise married Michael Marchesani from Union City, NJ. on May 17th, 1975. Last year they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with their adult children, Brendan and partner, Jordan Ramos, and Caitlyn with her husband, Alan Chan, at their lake house in Lake DeVenoge, NY. The star guest, being their beloved grandson Michael Benjamin Chan.

Settling in Cortlandt Manor, NY in the early years of their marriage they then relocated to tight-knit communities in Pennsylvania and outside Chicago, Illinois before moving to Zurich, Switzerland. From their European home they traveled extensively. Upon return they moved close to their children and dearest lifelong friends, affectionately known as the Jersey Crowd.

Denise delighted in being surrounded by family. Some memorable family adventures include an Iceland trip, a Smith cousin reunion in the Irish Catskills and a Memorial Day Weekend reunion with her siblings, nieces and nephews, numbering over 40, on the shores of Lake Sacandoga, NY.

Denise was a lifelong artist, especially gifted in painting and interior design. A certified Hatha Yoga Instructor she enjoyed teaching and practicing for many years. Her passions, besides her family, included walking, enjoying all art activities and sampling every dessert.

As a practicing Catholic, who found solace in her faith, we invite you to join her family in a gathering at Frank Patti Funeral Home on Tuesday April 7th and to Mass at St. Matthews Church on April 8th at 11AM, to celebrate her life.

Both flowers and donations are welcome. Denise loved colorful bouquets of Spring flowers especially, tulips, irises and daffodils. Donations can be sent to support Down Syndrome at Rock 21 (www.rockthe21.org) or the great work done at The Kaplen JCC supporting dementia patients and their caregivers (https://www.jccotp.org).

Ruth McElroy-Dougherty

Ruth J. McElroy-Dougherty

Ruth J McElroy- Dougherty (nee Sklarski), 94, of Leonia New Jersey, passed away on March 9,2026 at home.

Ruth was born on April 20, 1931in Cheektowaga New York to parents Joseph and Julia Sklarski. Born at home on Meadowbrook Parkway, she was baptized at Our Lady of Czestochowa. The family subsequently moved to Elma New York where Ruth attended a two-room schoolhouse until high school. Graduating from East Aurora High School in 1949 with a concentration in healthcare classes telegraphed her future pursuits. During these years Ruth was active in school activities and at her church.

Post secondary education/training included Deaconess Hospital of Nursing, graduating in 1952. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Education in 1979. Ruth enjoyed a long career in various health related occupations. She worked as a nurse at a small rural California hospital and a doctor’s office in Buffalo New York. She taught nursing to students at the New York State Board of Cooperative Educational Services and Meyer Memorial Hospital. She spent the final years of her career in the occupational health field.

Ruth enjoyed many years of travel with her second husband, John D. Dougherty. They had many adventures visiting locations both in this country and around the world. She loved her home, personally selecting and placing all items of domestic life to please her and others’ sense of beauty. She found great enjoyment in gardening, her “yard shoes” standing at the ready by the patio door.

Ruth has been the matriarch of our family; her sisters Nancy and Bonnie and her cousins Sally and Sandy celebrate her longevity. She is survived by her three children: Julie McElroy (Edde Sigler) of Kent, Ohio; David McElroy of Blasdell, New York; and Timothy McElroy (Terri) of Roxboro, North Carolina. Granddaughters Jamie Schwartzmiller (Justin) and Lauren McElroy also share in the sadness of their grandmother’s passing. Her great granddaughter Nessa will enjoy hearing the many family stories in years to come.

She also leaves behind her four stepchildren: J. Brooks Dougherty, Andrew Dougherty, Abigail O’Reilly (William), and Amanda Sihweil (Omar). Many step grandchildren/great grandchildren will also miss her and relive lasting memories in the coming years.

Predeceasing Ruth was her beloved husband of over thirty-five years John D. Dougherty, MD and her first husband William B McElroy.

Besides having a great impact on her family, Ruth was an active contributing member of her church, All Saints Episcopal. She served on the Vestry while helping initiate lasting activities to benefit the church community. A memorial service will take place at All Saints Episcopal Church on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at 10:00 AM.

John DeSimone

John DeSimone, a cherished pillar of Leonia, New Jersey, whose life was a testament to quiet dedication, unwavering community spirit, and an infectious joie de vivre, passed away on March 14, 2026, at Englewood Hospital. Born on November 26, 1947, at Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck, New Jersey, John carried with him a legacy of family devotion, civic engagement, and heartfelt kindness that touched all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

A graduate of Bergen Catholic High School in Paramus, NJ, John furthered his education at St. John’s University in New York, laying a foundation that would support both his business acumen and his thoughtful leadership. The DeSimone family’s connection to Moore’s Hardware in Leonia, a cherished community landmark, began in 1952 with John’s father, Ferruccio “Fred” DeSimone, and uncle Bruno at the helm. In 1986, John assumed sole ownership and stewardship of the store, carrying forward a tradition steeped in service and neighborhood camaraderie. The store was more than a place of commerce; it was a gathering spot where John became a de facto mayor, offering a listening ear, sage advice, and steady support to his neighbors.

John’s commitment to Leonia extended beyond the counter. Emboldened by his desire to help in tangible ways, he served on the town council from 2010 to 2012. Recognized for his resolve and ability to connect with the community, John won the mayoral election and served as Leonia’s Mayor from 2012 until 2016. In this role, he embodied the essence of humble service — never seeking fanfare, but always acting with purpose to uplift his fellow citizens.

Those who knew John remember a man whose heart was as expansive as his smile was bright. His personality was described as bubbly, warm, and full of good humor. It was impossible not to be drawn into his joy, where laughter was frequent and every day held the promise of a merry conversation. He delighted in the simple pleasures: old black and white movies, the timeless melodies of Frank Sinatra—recalling with reverence the day he witnessed Sinatra perform live on Long Island, amidst a sea of swooning fans. These memories breathed life into his stories, told with the heartfelt ease of a man who found joy in every chapter of his journey.

As a boy, John delivered newspapers across Fort Lee, a daily ritual that included faithfully bringing the morning paper to Frank Sinatra’s father. His sharp aim and punctuality earned him a generous Christmas gift—an early testament to the discipline and care that would define his life. His love for baseball was passionate and encyclopedic; stats flowed readily from his lips with as much enthusiasm as his fondness for the legendary Yogi Berra, whose aphorisms like “If you see a fork in the road, take it” echoed John’s own embrace of life’s unpredictable beauty.

John’s devotion extended deeply into his family. He was a supportive and encouraging presence, often seen coaching his children at their school sports events, sharing in their triumphs and guiding their dreams. Vacations to Walt Disney World were treasured times of bonding and joy, emblematic of his commitment to creating lasting memories for those he loved.

John’s immediate family who survive him include his beloved son John W. DeSimone (known affectionately as Duke), daughters Jennifer DeSimone and Jaime Ellison, and his son-in-law, Marc Ellison. The warmth of his legacy shines brightly in his six grandchildren—Emma, Mia, Mason, Jake, Kate, and Jack—who carry forward his spirit and laughter. His sister, Margaret (Peggy) Andrews, and beloved nieces and nephews also grieve alongside them. His longstanding partner and best friend, Rebecca Root, and her two children, Brady and Lindsay, were cherished companions who shared with John a true and lasting bond with smiles and laughter along the way.

John was preceded in death by his father, Ferruccio “Fred” DeSimone; his mother, Michalina (Margaret) DeSimone (née Fondi); and his brother, Robert “Bobby” DeSimone. Their memories live on in the fabric of the family and the community John so loved.

John DeSimone’s journey was defined by a steadfast dedication to family, an unshakeable commitment to community, and a heart filled with generosity expressed through quiet deeds rather than grandeur. His life invites reflection on the power of simple acts—delivering a newspaper on time, running a family-owned hardware store, serving as mayor—not for recognition, but because they simply needed to be done.

He leaves behind a Leonia forever touched by his kindness, a family rich with love, and memories that will continue to inspire smiles. To be in John’s presence was to be reminded that true happiness resides in humble service, warm laughter, and the gentle touch of a life well-loved.

In Loving Memory of Nicolaos Constantinides

1940-2026

Nicolaos Constantinides, known as Nico to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 13, 2026. He is survived by his wife Kyriaki, his children: Michael and daughter-in-law Maria, Polymnia and son-in-law Greg, John and partner Brian, his grandchildren: Nicholas, Anthony, Loukia, and Jonathan, his siblings and their spouses, and his many nieces and nephews.

Born in Cyprus on December 24, 1940, Nico was a Christmas blessing to his parents, Mihalis and Christalla Constantinides. They instilled the value of hard work and family to him and his three siblings, Androulla, Erini, and Andonaki.

As an immigrant, Nico worked many jobs to provide for his family. His dream was to be an entrepreneur. While his hard work paid off when he created K&K Produce, he was most proud at helping to establish Pan Hellenic Foods of New York– a wholesale produce company created and run by Greeks. He taught his children that anything can be achieved with hard work.

Even though produce was his career, he was a master gardener in his heart. Nico tirelessly toiled to create a spectacular landscape in his backyard. He could be seen cutting off leaves from the grape vine brought from Cyprus, dragging around one of his large lemon trees, or endlessly constructing traps to protect his garden from the squirrels and racoons who wanted a taste. In the end, he made a space where his grandchildren loved to run around and play.

Nico and Kyriaki enjoyed spending time together. Whether they were cooking, shopping, or just drinking coffee in the backyard, they were never far apart. Their love for one another was obvious by the way they took care of each other. In fact, Kyriaki tended to him night and day during the last years of his life. This is a testament of true love.

The family will receive their friends on Monday 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM at The Metropolitan Cathedral of St. John The Theologian 353 E Clinton Ave. Tenafly, NJ 07670. There will be a religious service at 11:30 AM. The interment will follow at George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus. Harold Najarian

Harold was born on June 23, 1927, the first of three children born to Charles and Vergine Najarian in Weehawken, NJ. For the first 5 years of his life, he grew up in a home with his parents, grandparents, 2 great grandmothers and several aunts.

His youth was spent surrounded by a tight knit Armenian family, with many of his cousins becoming his playmates.

While attending Union Hill High School in Union City, NJ, he was drafted by Uncle Sam just shy of graduation towards the end of WWII. While his family was not happy about this, he was extremely proud of his service to our country. After serving honorably in the Army, he returned home and completed his high school education.

He worked for his father in the family grocery store business finishing his career at Kings Super Market.

Through his outgoing and friendly personality, Harold maintained friendships that lasted for a life time with his cousins, school buddies, and neighbors. He was an active member of the American Legion Post 142 of Maywood and the Ridgefield Senior Citizens.

Harold enjoyed spending time at the beach: swimming, fishing, and tanning in the sun. He also enjoyed traveling, the NY Yankees, and NY Giants. Perhaps his most favorite thing was playing poker. Whether it was with family or friends, he was always ready to join a game.

He will be missed by so many especially his nieces and nephews.
