Salvatore Petrecca

1939–2025

Salvatore Petrecca, of Dundee, FLA, formerly of Fort Lee, NJ, born in Castelpetroso, Molise, Italy, on 3 November 1939, passed away peacefully on 13 November 2025, surrounded by family.

Salvatore was the youngest of four children — Domenico, Rosina, and Alberto came before him — born to Antonietta (née Valentino) and Nicola Petrecca. When he emigrated to America in 1956, it was not just for opportunity, but to support his parents back in Italy. He worked, saved, and sent money home, helping sustain the family who had shaped his early life. That sense of duty never left him — for Salvatore, family was not an idea, it was a responsibility carried with pride.

Born into a family of builders and craftsmen, Salvatore learned his trade in the small shops of his village, where his father and brothers taught him to fix anything placed in his hands. In 1956 he came to the United States, carrying little more than his skill, courage, and the work ethic that would define his life. Salvatore was also known in Fort Lee and the surrounding areas as an owner of The Secret Garden Flower Shop of Fort Lee.

He married Maria (née DeFilippis), and together they raised three children: Robert, Anthony, and Rosemarie.

He later married Vicky Tapia, who remained by his side through his final years.

Salvatore was a master builder in every sense—a man who could lift a house with a crane, rebuild its foundation, weld steam pipes, assemble complex boilers without looking at the prints, and still greet everyone he met with a smile. He ran construction projects across New York City, renovated historic buildings, and spent decades building medical offices on the Upper East Side. His hands shaped more of the city than he ever spoke about.

In his seventies, he reinvented himself again as a restauranteur, opening Primo’s Pizzeria in Lakeland, Florida, where he greeted customers with the same warmth and pride he once brought to construction sites. He poured the same joy, precision, and hospitality into the food and the room as he had into every beam and boiler before it.

To his children, he passed down not only his skill, but his courage—his rule for life: never be afraid to take risks or try something new.

Salvatore is survived by his children Robert, Anthony, and Rosemarie; his daughter-in-law Diana; his step-daughter Josephine; and his grandchildren Michael, MarcAnthony, Alex, and Ryan. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Maria.

Visitation will be held on Friday, 21 November 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at Frank Patti Funeral Home, 327 Main Street, Fort Lee, New Jersey. A final visitation will take place on Saturday, 22 November 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Frank Patti Funeral Home, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. at Madonna on the Hill Chapel in Fort Lee. Interment to follow immediately at Madonna Cemetery.

Salvatore worked with joy, lived with kindness, and met life with a strength few will ever match. Those who knew him will carry his example—and his stories—for the rest of their lives.

Sun Ae Kim

Sun Ae Kim was born in Dae Gu, South Korea on January 1, 1938. She was the 2nd child of 7 children to her parents, Dal Bum Lee and Boon Yi Kim. She aspired to go to college as a young adult but due to limited family resources, she went to nursing school instead and used her savings to send her younger brother to college in her place. In 1963, at the age of 25, she boldly left her family behind in an impoverished country still recovering from the devastation of the Korean War, in search of economic opportunities in the United States. While adjusting to a new culture and language, she worked diligently as a nurse in an American hospital and sent her earnings to support her struggling family back home in Korea.

Her plans of returning to Korea quickly changed after she met and married Jong Doo Kim, then a seminary student in Philadelphia, a year later. She later followed her husband to Munich, West Germany after he changed career paths and decided to pursue a doctorate in Philosophy and Western Theology. She continued to work as a nurse in a US army hospital based in West Germany to support her husband while he studied. In her free time, she spent much of her time traveling to different parts of Europe with him, collecting postcards to commemorate their many trips, which she would later recall as being one of the happiest times in her life.

In 1971, she returned to the US and gave birth to her first daughter, Jeannie in New York. A year later, her second daughter, Susan, was born. She continued to work as a nurse during this time to support her new family while still sending money when she could to support her family in Korea. In 1980, her husband returned to Munich to focus on his studies. Finally, after 13 years of study, he eventually earned his doctorate in Philosophy and Western Theology from Munich University in 1982 after completing his dissertation in German.

While her husband was away in Germany, she remained in Brooklyn, New York with her young daughters and continued to work faithfully as a nurse to support her family, often taking the less desired night shifts, as the pay was higher. Despite the hardship she endured as a single mother in a foreign land, she raised her daughters well and saw them graduate from college and graduate school. Jeannie became a Speech Language Pathologist after earning her Master’s Degree from Teacher’s College at Columbia University in 2000. Susan became a kidney doctor after earning her medical degree from SUNY Downstate in 1998 and completing her nephrology fellowship at Weil-Cornell Medical Center in 2004. During this tumultuous time, she somehow managed to find time to take college courses in pursuit of her own dream for higher education and eventually earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Hunter College in 1993.

Mom was loyal and always concerned about her family’s welfare. She sponsored 4 of her sisters and their families and helped them emigrate to the US. She also helped bring her mother to the US for a better life. She was generous with her resources and continued to financially support her family and others when she could, to improve their situation, even if it meant she had less for herself. She was a devout Christian and taught us to care for the less fortunate by example.

During the latter years of her life, she found delight in caring for her 3 grandchildren, Noah, Justin and Julian. Her face would brighten by the sheer mention of their names, and she was always joyful in their presence. Mom will be remembered for her generosity, loyalty to her loved ones, tenacity and her sense of adventure. She will be missed by us all.

She is survived by her daughters, Jeannie and Susan, grandsons Noah, Justin and Julian and her sisters Young Ae, Jung Ae and Kyung Ae.

Satoshi Koike

Satoshi Koike, age 82, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2025.

Born on March 25, 1943, in Nagoya, Japan, Satoshi was the youngest son of the late Sota and Hanako Koike. After graduating from Aichi University, Satoshi set out to see the world. In the early 1970s, he journeyed from Japan to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he began working at a local restaurant called Sip n Steaks. There, he met Theresa King and together they welcomed their daughter, Kiyomi, whom he cherished deeply.

Satoshi spent much of his life in the restaurant business, a career that allowed him to share his love of food and people. He was especially fond of all things Italian: traveling to Italy, savoring Italian cuisine, and watching the Rocky “The Italian Stallion.” films. He especially enjoyed going to the movies and exploring Philadelphia’s Italian restaurants with his granddaughters, creating memories they will treasure forever.

Satoshi is survived by his beloved daughter, Kiyomi Soriano (née King); his son-in-law, Miguel Soriano; and his granddaughters, Yukiko Soriano and Esmeralda Soriano, all of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He will also be fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, and friends.

He now joins his loving parents, Sota and Hanako Koike, and his dear siblings, Yukako Sugimoto and Mikio Koike, who preceded him in death.

A celebration of Satoshi’s life will be held at 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Friday, October 24, at Frank Patti & Kenneth Mikatarian Funeral Home in Fort Lee, New Jersey.
