🧠💥 SCI isn’t just about paralysis.

Many people don’t realize the secondary complications that come with a spinal cord injury like pressure sores, autonomic dysreflexia, chronic pain, and respiratory issues.

The long-term complications can be just as serious — even life-threatening. Here are the leading causes of death after SCI:
1️⃣ Respiratory issues (like pneumonia)
2️⃣ Heart disease
3️⃣ Severe infections (especially UTIs & pressure sores)
4️⃣ Su***de – mental health matters.
5️⃣ Kidney failure
6️⃣ Autonomic dysreflexia – a silent emergency.

These aren’t talked about enough.
➡️ Awareness = prevention.
➡️ Early intervention = better outcomes.

💚 Not all spinal cord injuries are the same. In fact, many are incomplete injuries, meaning there is still some function below the level of injury.

Here are a few of the most common types ⬇️

✨ Brown-Séquard Syndrome – Weakness/paralysis on one side of the body, loss of sensation on the opposite side.

✨ Anterior Cord Syndrome – Loss of movement, pain, and temperature sensation below the injury, but light touch may remain.

✨ Posterior Cord Syndrome – Preserves movement but causes loss of coordination and balance due to damaged position sense.

✨ Central Cord Syndrome – More weakness in the arms than legs, often caused by trauma in the cervical spine.

🧠 Understanding these patterns is key to rehab, recovery, and awareness. Knowledge is power for both patients and providers.

Knowing where an injury occurs helps explain its effects.

Cervical injuries:
-located in the neck
-account for the majority of SCI cases
-can result in tetraplegia (affecting arms, trunk, legs, bowel & bladder, and sometimes breathing)

Thoracic injuries:
-located in the mid-back
-result in paraplegia
-affect the trunk, legs, and bowel/bladder, with arm function spared

Lumbar injuries:
-located in the lower back
-typically cause paraplegia
-primarily impact leg and bowel/bladder function

Sacral injuries:
-extremely rare (

💥Vote for Griffin:Youth Athlete of the Year💥

At just 14, Griffin is the definition of grit and resilience. A true lefty with a nasty curveball, he’s been on the diamond since he was 4. But his biggest battle came off the field.

Last summer, G suffered a sudden brain bleed caused by an undiagnosed AVM while training in the batting cage. He spent 2 weeks in the ICU, 2 months in the hospital, and has spent the past year in daily therapy relearning how to walk, talk, and live again.

From needing machines to survive to now thriving in school and life, G is a warrior in every sense of the word. 🧠⚾️💪

Help us honor his incredible journey and vote Griffin for Youth Athlete of the Year 🏆✨
