A lot of people don’t believe us at first, but the nervous system has a lot to do with your gut health and immune system. There is a nerve that goes from the area where your brain stem rests, down your neck, and into the middle section of your body. This nerve is called the vagus nerve, and is responsible for a lot more than you would think. One responsibility of the vagus nerve lies with the typical rest and digest functions. This means you are not actively doing anything, like digestion. It also has a hand in your immune response. 😷

Specific signals or messages go from your vagus nerve to your brain and vice versa to control digestion. These signals that travel the pathway from your brain to your gut are key for the contractions that happen in your stomach to digest the food you have consumed, as well as release gastrin into the blood when you have eaten certain foods with high fat or protein content.

The vagus nerve is also highly involved with the immune system. Typically when you are beginning to catch a cold or illness, your immune system starts to act. Because the vagus nerve travels from the brain to the rest of your body functions, it also serves as a pathway for the signals that let your body know when it is time to recover from an illness. If the vagus nerve is suffering from dysfunction or unable to send the proper signals throughout your body, your immune system will suffer as well because many cytokine cells will be produced, causing excessive inflammation. 🤕

Inflammation is not only a short term prognosis. When excessive inflammation is present in your body for long periods of time, and you are under constant stress, your immune system and other functions controlled via the vagus nerve can become unregulated, leading to long term or chronic illnesses.

The vagus nerve can be regulated with nervous system focused chiropractic care. Our scans focus on the tension and pressure held within your nervous system, as well as what parts of your nervous system are in overdrive or if they are repressed. Make sure to get your appointment in now that is is the start of flu season! ❄️🤧

Children with hyposensitivity sometimes react differently to sensory inputs such as sights, sounds, smells, and textures, which causes them to seek out more sensory experiences. To the outside, it might look like making funny sounds in class, not reacting to touch, or sounds like a teacher loudly calling out their name. 🗣️ It also can look like ignoring unwritten boundaries, a need to bounce around, or squeezing their favorite stuffed animal extra hard. 🧸 Sensory seeking can often be seen as misbehaving rather than a child with hyposensitivity needing support. With sensory seeking sometimes comes bullying and being made fun of due to these "behaviors." 😞

"I just want them to fit in" is something we hear parents say often. The good news is that the root cause of all of this can almost always be tracked to a dysregulated nervous system! But how are the two connected?? Neurologically-Focused Pediatric Chiropractic Adjustments put sensory input into the brain and body, which can calm the nervous system and allow your child to be the kid they were meant to be! 💪🥹

Exhaustion is usually paired with a sensitive nervous system. 😩Why?? Because the nervous system controls every function in the body, and when everything isn't working quite right, exhaustion settles in. 🫠

In order to get to the root cause of exhaustion and fatigue, we have to build resilience within the nervous system. Which is where we bring in our favorite thing ever… Neurologically-Focused Chiropractic Adjustments. 🤗 When the body gets adjusted, the brain reminds the body what a state of safety feels like and retrains the nervous system on how to correctly perceive stress. 🙌

Now when stress comes our way, our nervous system can process those feelings instead of storing them as what we call subluxation!!

Chronic inflammation has long been misunderstood and poorly managed in medicine.🫩Anti-inflammatory drugs temporarily reduce symptoms, but the underlying dysfunction persists while side effects accumulate. Instead, stimulating the vagus nerve and restoring balance to the autonomic nervous system is key to resolving stubborn, treatment-resistant inflammation.

An assessment of heart rate variability (HRV)❤️delivers an objective and precise measurement of current vagus nerve tone and parasympathetic function—critical data points for gauging nervous system dysfunction.

If your child is struggling with inflammation-related symptoms, such as immune or autoimmune disorders, autism spectrum disorder, anxiety, seizures, or other neuroimmune-related health challenges, contact us! We can help get to the root of the vagus nerve dysfunction and out-of-control inflammation.👍
