Diabetic retinopathy is an eye condition that can happen in people with diabetes. It affects the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of your eye that helps you see. Diabetes can damage the tiny blood vessels in the retina, leading to vision problems.

Symptoms
In early stages, there may be no symptoms. As the condition gets worse, you may notice:
Blurry or fluctuating vision
Floaters (dark spots or strings in your vision)
Trouble seeing at night
Dark or empty spots in your vision
Important: Do not wait for symptoms—retinopathy can be silent at first.

How Is It Diagnosed?
A comprehensive dilated eye exam is needed. Your eye doctor may use:
Dilated eye exam
Retinal photos/imaging (OCT, fundus photos)
Fluorescein angiography (in some cases)

Diabetes can affect your vision in several ways—both short-term and long-term—because high blood sugar impacts the blood vessels and structures inside your eyes.
When blood sugar levels fluctuate (especially if they’re high), it can cause temporary blurry vision. This happens because high sugar levels pull fluid into the lens of the eye, changing its shape and ability to focus.

👀Diabetic Eye Disease👀
November is Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness Month! When someone has Diabetic eye disease, it means they have one or more eye conditions caused or worsened by having Diabetes. The most common of these is Diabetic retinopathy. It is important to note that many people don’t have symptoms in the early stages, so damage can accumulate without being noticed. Be sure to schedule routine appointments with your eye doctor to prevent vision loss. Follow our page to learn more about diabetes and your vision this month.
