How are you feeling this week? Check in with your mind and your body. What are you noticing?

Today was a very important full moon lunar eclipse in Virgo. This particular lunar eclipse and full moon is asking us to be honest with ourselves and let go of things that simply aren’t working for us anymore. Stress? Habits? Clutter around the house? Beliefs? Ways of thinking? This is a potent time to truly release what might be weighing you down and make room for improvements, better times, a lighter load, or releasing trauma in a completely new way.

The news in the world is heavy. The astrology also has been heavy. So if you’re feeling low energy or headaches or sleep disruptions, pay attention. You may be a very sensitive person picking up on the collective frequency around you.

Keep yourself grounded in reality. Control what you can control and let go of the rest. Spend time outside. Touch grass. Journal. Appreciate beauty and simplicity around you. Try a gratitude practice… Simply being grateful that you have breath. Focus on loving yourself and others and caring deeply for your own wellness and that of your loved ones. Take your vitamins. Drink your water.

Ask for Support if needed. Trauma informed integrative counseling and functional medicine practices can help you be your best self regardless of external events.

During challenging times, it can be so easy to get caught up in overthinking, worrying, questioning and strategizing instead of being fully present. We all have a lot of distractions, globally, nationally, in our own communities and in our personal lives. Take a moment and check your thoughts right now.

A great strategy to stop the ruminating and overthinking is to just notice that you’re doing it. Then take a deep breath and look around. Name five things that you see. Name four things that you can physically touch. Name three colors that you can identify. Name two things that you can hear. Make one really long sound, like humming or sighing, or yes, even hollering. Notice the temperature on your skin. Take another big deep breath and wiggle your fingers and toes or shimmy your shoulders or wiggle your hips, moving the body intentionally to “shake it off”

Just taking a moment to do these things helps to shift our focus from our internal anxiety or emotional distress to the external environment. It reduces sympathetic nervous system arousal and helps us to be fully present in that moment. You could call this a grounding technique that helps the central nervous system to calm down. This process interrupts the stress response of the fight, flight or freeze loop that you might be experiencing.

Identifying things you see, hear, touch or experience out loud helps the brain to be more present in the moment which will promote emotional regulation and help calm your body.

This seems so simple, but the more that we practice this, the easier it will be to regulate our internal systems. It promotes neuroplasticity and sensory engagemet during times of high stress.

What do you see, hear and feel right now? Check it out… And a little while later, change locations and do it again.

Take a moment for yourself. You deserve it. We all deserve peace. It’s an inside job.

Integrative, trauma informed counseling can help.

Stay grounded.

We are being flooded with information about horrific crimes, darkness, human rights violations, betrayal, violence, and uncertainty in the news and on social media right now. The intensity can cause an emotional flooding, disassociation, confusion, shutting down and even spiritual fracturing.

While it is very important to stay informed, please limit your scrolling. Make choices about how you will stay informed, what you need to know, and what action you choose to take. With the flood of information being offered, it’s easy to become overwhelmed and shut down. These are unprecedented times.

Staying informed is important. We have to take care of our mental health and acknowledge our capacity also. We are experiencing a collective complex trauma which includes extraordinarily complex grief.

Focus on your wellness and mental health, stay grounded, take care of your spiritual and energetic self, engage in gentle somatic practices, experience joy with your family or friends and ask for help and support when needed. Honor your triggers and you’re outrage. Communicate with your representatives when you can.

Trauma informed integrative counseling and brainspotting can help reduce symptoms of fear, anxiety and dysregulation.

Take care of yourself and each each other.

Give it a try. Love is greater than hate.

Love yourself. Love your family. Love your neighbors. Love your community. Love people who are different from you. Love people who are similar to you. Love people from other countries. Love diversity. Love being alive. Love laughter. Love music. Love dancing. Love the opportunity to learn new things. Love exploring new ways of being. Love everyone. Put a little love in your heart. Love grows.

Wouldn’t it be amazing if all structures, all systems, all communication, all ways of living were heart centered and filled with love?

Emotional pain is often described as the feelings of sadness, low energy, exhaustion, depression or withdrawal. But emotional pain, in the true sense, is much more than that. There are many layers to the deeply rooted causes of pain in this experience.

Emotional pain is not just the emotional, behavioral or cognitive symptoms like anxiety, depression, overthinking, withdrawal or aggression. Emotional pain is the core experience that lies beneath all of these symptoms. It is the deeply rooted core unmet needs that show up when there is a trigger or broken trust in our relationships, in our environments, or in our personal experiences.

Avoidant behavior, feelings of hopelessness, fear, shame, loneliness, feelings of worthlessness and more are the deeper layers of true emotional pain. During counseling, we not only address the symptoms, but the root causes of emotional pain.

During counseling, we reframe these painful experiences into healing experiences. Brainspotting, trauma informed practices, counseling, somatic healing, and lifestyle changes can help to support this healing process through acknowledging your inner child needs and helping all of the parts of ourselves to recover.

Learn to listen to your emotional pain. Your body will give you signals. We can train our minds to listen, make changes with our lifestyle, personal care practices and thought patterns and move through these challenges, break patterns and thrive.

Trauma informed, integrative health therapists can help. You can rewrite your story and move forward with love and trust in your heart for yourself.

Hey. So I guess we need to talk about racism, oppression, and hate again.

I’m here to remind you that outrage, fury and overwhelm would be normal emotions right now. Be gentle with yourself and acknowledge your feelings.
Allow yourself time and space to process as needed.

Blatant racist propaganda, attempts to oppress groups who have been historically discriminated against, violations of human rights, violence against people, sa**sm, crimes against children etc. feels very threatening. That’s because it is threatening.

Our central nervous system systems are wired to protect us. When something feels scary… directly or indirectly… our bodies are going to respond with somatic sensations. Our mind follows suit with our own personal narratives and efforts to understand what is happening.

When our leaders, government officials, administration, justice system, and communities feel threatening, we do not feel safe. So, your feelings of unrest, disappointment, anger, desperation, grief, and more are normal. The current circumstances, however, are not normal.

Focus on yourself so that you can build a sense of emotional and physical safety for yourself and your loved ones first. Increase your stamina and your nourishment. have a meeting with yourself and evaluate your values, ethics, and morals. See if you can figure out “what’s my bottom line?”. Journal, scream, do physical exercises, create art, or whatever you need to do to help your body and mind process recent events

And when you are ready and able, speak up against racism, fascism, violence, crimes against humanity and human rights.

We are one. We are here together. These are transformational times. Reach out for counseling or spiritual support if needed. Check on your friends. Take care of yourselves.

Love Trump’s hate. Love everyone.

And yes, counseling, therapy, engagement and healing work, etc. does have to involve these conversations. We cannot heal in an environment that is traumatic and threatening.

A gentle clarification…

I have been told that some of my posts feel “too political”.

I want to be clear about why I speak to the current events, the collective trauma and human rights.

Therapy is always been connected to the social world we live in. Policies, laws, violence, displacement, discrimination, politics, social barriers that directly affect mental health, safety, and access to care are relevant to our well-being.

As an experienced counselor and advocate, my ethical and professional responsibilities include:

- acknowledging collective and ongoing trauma

- staying informed and offering public education about the forces that impact client well-being and mental health

- advocating for equity, dignity, and access to care for everyone

- supporting marginalized and oppressed communities and upholding the dignity and worth of all people

- holding safe space for all who seek care and support, regardless of color, religion, trauma, or life circumstances

This is not optional. It is part of my professional ethics.

The American Counseling Association’s and the Counselors for Social Justice’s codes of ethics explicitly calls for counselors to:

-work towards social justice and the reduction of oppression (A.7.a)

-advocate for the removal of systemic barriers that harm clients (A.6.b)

I stand on the side of health, human rights, informed care, prevention, compassion, and laws that protect people from harm.

If that feels “two political”, I understand. But for me, it is ethical, clinical, and deeply human. This is counseling.

I will continue to educate and promote the principles of wellness, justice and loving kindness.

Take care of yourselves. Stay informed. Stay connected. Be gentle with yourselves and others. Be safe. And be a safe person for others.

Feeling overwhelmed with emotion about what’s going on in our country? Good. That’s a totally normal response to gaslighting, lies, deceit, violence against Americans and the murder and abduction of innocent people. It is overwhelming.

Feel what you feel so that you can process it and integrate it and decide with clarity what you want to do if anything.

I was reminded today by about the teachings of the Bhagavad-Gita. “When injustice and violence take over, and force becomes unavoidable, how should a human being respond?”

The Gita says that we have three choices: we can meet violence on the same level force for force. We can turn away and refuse to engage at all. Or we can “become a yogi”.

The Yogi confronts without confronting. Acts without acting. Succeed without succeeding. By working on your own dharma and the truth that you were born to stand for, then you are engaging in the yoga path to challenge authority as it is.

As I’ve mentioned in most of my Instagram post over the years, we have our own choice about how we choose respond to outrageous circumstances that we experience in our life.

Staying indifferent and unengaged can make us complicit. Be willing to engage in the full human experience of feeling the emotions. Remember that many different emotions can exist at the same time.

Trust what you see and hear. Don’t let propaganda and gaslighting work. Check your own, thinking to be sure that thoughts are rational, and not a projection of someone else’s demands. Turn inward and find peace in the chaos. Cultivate small moments of joy in your own personal life. Breathe deeply. Listen to your own intuition. You’ll be better able to choose what it is that you want to do based on your own destiny if you can find balance in your mind, body and spirit.

Integrative counseling and somatic healing practices can help during this time of great change and uncertainty.

We are all in this together. Be kind to yourself and kind to each other. 💕

Playing the anxious game of mental gymnastics could be your mind trying to make sense of a situation that doesn’t make sense. Or perhaps it’s your mind trying to work with your overstimulated, dysregulated central nervous system. Or maybe the overthinking stems from your own trauma in which it’s hard for you to admit that you’ve been hurt in the past so your mind creates narratives and stories to help you put a more comfortable spin on what is actually happening. Maybe you’re trying to justify something that’s not justifiable.

Whether you are overthinking and doing mental gymnastics within your own relationships, within your family of origin, in your career or even with what is going on geopolitically across our country right now with human rights violations, be aware that your mind is not acting alone. Over explaining, justifying, choosing not to be involved, hiding, denying, utilizing the silent treatment, avoiding, dismissing, etc., are all stemming from a deeper root cause that only you can address.

Notice your thoughts. If your thoughts are racing or spinning, or if you’re trying to justify someone else’s horrible mistreatment or barbaric behavior, it might be a good time to check yourself. Where are your thoughts coming from? Be curious. Be willing to change your thoughts.

Look up. We’re all together walking around under this blue sky and if we’re lucky, underneath nice oak trees like this one.

What are your values? What are your personal decisions that are creating your life circumstances? What are your biases? What is really at the root of who you are? What policies, values, and life philosophies do you align with? Are your beliefs harmful to others?

Do something to help you to come back to yourself. The world is spinning with chaos, confusion, violence, and atrocities. Go outside. Touch grass. Be kind to each other. Meditate. Focus on your own breath. Engage in a joyful activity. Speak up and speak out against the abuse of power in your life and in our world. Connect with your true self.

We’re all in this together. Counseling and somatic healing practices can help.
