We are fortunate to have Dr Onal and our amazing cardiac sonographers!

Did you know a baby could be diagnosed with cardiac conditions while still in the womb?

Dr. Tankut Onal and his team at the Golisano Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida pediatric cardiology and cardiovascular office performed fetal echocardiography on his patient to test for any cardiac conditions before birth. Echocardiography can help detect abnormalities in your baby’s heart, such as abnormal heart valves, congenital heart disease, heart murmurs, and inflammation or liquid in the sac around the heart.

Today is the end of congenital heart disease awareness week, but we will continue to empower patients and their families. Dr. Onal believes that children are the most precious members of our community, and he takes joy in serving them.

It's Congenital Heart Disease Awareness Week!

To celebrate, our pediatric cardiology and cardiovascular services teams made gift bags for their patients with cute heart-shaped balloons attached. Congenital heart disease affects the structure of a person’s heart. The word “congenital” means that the disease is present at birth—it may reveal itself as a hole in the heart or missing and deformed parts of the heart. But our friendly experts are trained to care for children with congenital and acquired heart conditions, from before birth through adulthood.

This week, Golisano Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida wants to recognize children born with cardiac irregularities and highlight the latest technology that diagnoses and provides ongoing care, while creating a warm and reassuring environment for families.

In addition to Heart Month, we're also honoring Black History Month.

Vivien Thomas is a pioneer in the treatment of congenital heart disease, working with Drs. Alfred Blalock and Helen Taussig to develop the "blue baby operation" in the 1940s.

Here is a blog post from ACHA Board Member William F. Causey, which shares the importance of Vivien Thomas's role during his life-saving surgery in 1952. https://bit.ly/3YjdI2w
