SPINAL STENOSIS occurs when the spinal column's inner core narrows, which causes pressure on nerves. This can lead to pain, numbness and weakness in the legs, and other symptoms.

Known for offering some of the most innovative, minimally invasive procedures in southwest Florida, Advanced Pain Management & Spine Specialists offer many spinal stenosis patients options that help them avoid (or greatly delay) the need for open surgery.

One procedure is MINUTEMAN. Through a 1-inch incision, MINUTEMAN is performed in less than an hour. Because there is no cutting through muscles or bone, the patient is able to return home the same day.

Within a couple of weeks following the procedure, most patients say they are sleeping much better and walking up to a mile without pain.

Lumbar Spinal Stenosis (LSS) causes low back pain that is typically accompanied by:

• Pain, weakness or numbness in the legs, calves or buttocks
• Cramping in the calves with walking, requiring frequent short rests
• Pain radiating into one or both thighs and legs, similar to sciatica
• Pain relief when bending forward, sitting or lying down

When periodic injections fail to provide sufficient results or need to be repeated frequently, MILD® (Minimally-Invasive Lumbar Decompression) may be recommended.

MILD® (Minimally Invasive Lumbar Decompression) is an outpatient procedure that provides long-term relief. The MILD® procedure is performed in about 30 minutes through an incision less than an inch. It is covered by Medicare nationwide.

Within days, MILD® typically provides:
- Reduction in pain
- Restored mobility
- Increased standing time of up to an hour
- Increased walking distance

MILD® also has a low complication risk, proven to be as safe as an injection.

If LSS is causing you discomfort that is beyond what injections are able to control, discuss the MILD® procedure with board certified interventional pain management physician Jonathan S. Daitch, MD of Advanced Pain Management & Spine Specialists (APMSS).

CONGRATULATIONS
to Jonathan S. Daitch, MD on his presentation "How MINUTEMAN Treats Degenerative Instability" on October 22nd.

The presentation, held at Connors, was sponsored by SpinalSimplicity. In his presentation, Dr. Daitch discussed the option of the MINUTEMAN procedure to the Interventional Pain Community with neurosurgical colleagues present as well.

MINUTEMAN is a minimally invasive procedure that treats symptoms related to spinal stenosis, such as:
• a decreased ability to walk more than a block or two
• difficulty standing for more than 10 or 15 minutes
• buttock and leg pain that worsens with standing and walking, but improves with sitting or bending forward

To learn more about the MINUTEMAN procedure, hear some patients share their experience in brief video interviews with Dr. Daitch (under heading on right hand of pg):

Disc degeneration can lead to spinal stenosis, causing a decreased ability to walk more than a block or two or stand more than 10 - 15 minutes. It is often accompanied by buttock and leg pain that worsens with standing and walking.

MINUTEMAN, a minimally-invasive spine stabilizing device (fusion) procedure, is performed through a one-inch incision in about 25 - 30 minutes. (This is compared to the usual 3 - 4 hour spinal fusion surgery time when performed at a hospital followed by a 2 - 3 month recovery.)

The MINUTEMAN procedure can be especially beneficial for patients who have been offered more extensive surgical fusion procedures and prefer a less invasive option or for patients who may be unable to withstand more complex in-hospital procedures.

And, because Minuteman does not involve cutting any muscles or bone, recovery is quick with minimal post-op discomfort.

If you suffer from spinal stenosis, buttock and leg pain and have not found relief from conservative treatments, MINUTEMAN may be an ideal solution.

Call 239-437-8000 to schedule an examination with board certified Interventional Pain Management physician Jonathan S. Daitch, MD.

Dr. Daitch's "GOOD TO KNOW"

Advanced Pain Management & Spine Specialists is known for offering the latest in technology and techniques to eliminate or greatly minimize acute and chronic pain.

Although procedural videos are available to explain the process, many patients find it most helpful to hear from those who have "been there, done that."

To hear recovered patients share their experience, our "Treatments" page has a right-hand column that shares some patient interviews at post-op appointments, including patients who've had:

MILD (Minimally Invasive Lumbar Decompression)
MinuteMan
InSpan
FacetFuse
Intracept
SI Fusion
Sacroplasty
Targeted Injections
ViaDisc

These brief videos can provide a patient's perspective for those considering certain procedures, which often helps patients feel more confident in going forward with treatment.

BURSITIS RELIEF

Bursae (bur-SEE), part of the skeletal system, allow tendons, muscle and bone to move together without friction.

Repetitive motion, accidents and injuries can irritate the bursae, causing fluid to build. This leaves less space for joints and connective tissue to move, leading to friction and pain.

BURSA INJECTIONS contain steroids that soothe inflammation and joint pain by reducing this swelling. BURSA INJECTIONS are commonly used to treat bursitis of the:
• Hip
• Shoulder
• Elbow
• Hamstring or buttocks
• Knee

Relief typically occurs within a few days. Stretching and strengthening exercises may help you avoid reoccurring symptoms. However, when inflammation involves the tendon (because of its proximity to the bursa in some joints), an injection to another area may be advised.

Our pain management physicians will discuss options to help you avoid (or delay) the need for surgery.

The anatomy of the spine is a complex assembly that includes:

• Vertebrae - These 33 bones are stacked on top of each other with a cushioning of intervertebral discs between each.

• Intervertebral discs - Between each vertebrae, these serve as shock absorbers. Their tough outer ring surrounds a soft inner core, known as the nucleus pulposus.

• Ligaments - These are "ropes" of tissue that connect the vertebrae and stabilize the spine.

• Facet joints - These joints are located on the back of each vertebra and connect to the one above and below. The facet joints are what allow for movement, such as bending and twisting. They also provide stability by preventing excessive motion.

• Spinal canal - This hollow tube through the center of vertebrae contains the spinal cord.

Specifically, a facet joint contains cartilage and lubricating fluid and is susceptible to arthritis and pain. When a spinal fusion is recommended, many people may have another, less invasive option.

FacetFuse® provides effective stabilization and pain relief with a faster return to normal activities. Unlike traditional multilevel “rods and screws fusion," FacetFuse stabilizes the spine through small incisions, reducing trauma to surrounding muscles and tissues. This less-disruptive approach prioritizes preservation of natural anatomy while ensuring optimal stabilization.

With shorter recovery times, fewer complications, and a quicker return to daily life, FacetFuse is redefining the way spinal fusion is performed.

FacetFuse is one of many minimally invasive procedures offered by Advanced Pain Management & Spine Specialists. Board certified interventional pain management physician Jonathan S. Daitch, MD is known for his commitment to restoring comfort and mobility to patients, often to those who have suffered with debilitating pain for decades.

IS IT SCIATICA?
Common symptoms of sciatica are:

• Shooting pain that extends from the lower back/buttocks down one leg
• Feeling of numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness in the affected leg
• Pain that worsens with sitting, coughing, or sneezing

At Advanced Pain Management & Spine Specialists, we offer several options to help relieve the nagging - and often debilitating - discomfort of sciatica. These include:

InSpan – This minimally invasive implanted device creates space between offending nerve roots and helps to stabilize the spine.

Epidural Steroid Injections – This injection delivers local anesthetic and steroid to treat pain from persistent sciatica.

Selective Nerve Root Injections – These injections deliver local anesthetic and steroid along the exiting spinal nerve root for sciatic pain emanating from the nerve root.

Percutaneous Disc Decompression – This minimally invasive procedure removes a small amount of disc that is pressing on the nerve root. This is particularly beneficial when injections do not provide adequate relief.

Because sciatica stems from a nerve rather than a muscle, rapid relief can occur when these simple yet effective measures are used in experienced hands. Jonathan S. Daitch, MD is an interventional pain management physician who has a longstanding reputation for relieving pain and helping patients get back to normal lifestyles.
