I started using the Finch app over a year ago. I honestly wasn’t interested at first, but I kept hearing other counselors recommend it, so I gave it a shot.

What surprised me is how effective it’s been for building small, steady habits: daily deep breathing, gratitude, more awareness of my thoughts, weekly goal setting… and somehow, washing my face every night for a full year. That one alone is a minor miracle for me. You can also set your own goals.

Finch uses gamification psychology in a gentle way. You take care of an imaginary birb (bird), and in the process, you end up taking better care of yourself. The rewards are simple, the tone is kind, and the structure lowers the barrier to follow-through.

It’s not for everyone, but I’ve had several clients find real success with it, and I wanted to pass along a tool that feels more playful than clinical, yet still grounded in solid behavior change principles.

A friend said today that she should do something productive because she was just sitting on the couch, and I pushed back. Rest is productive. Our culture treats constant busyness like a virtue, and for years we’ve expected big, sweeping changes to start on January 1. Lately, though, I’m noticing some pushback against that mindset, and honestly, it makes me a little excited.

Not knowing who you are doesn’t mean you’re broken.

As a therapist I understand people not wanting to tell the story "again". Sometimes we don't have to. I believe in finding what works for each client.

Apparently I have a signature wave. A client noticed. I accepted the assignment.

I posted this five years ago.

For some reason, Edna has always reminded me of a therapist. Maybe it’s the chair and the glasses. Maybe it’s her stance, like she’s about to drop some truth bombs.

At the time, I was working at Little River Counseling after leaving my full-time job at 5:00 pm. I usually left around 8:30 pm. Long days. A grind. And I was SO happy.

I’m still happy.

I love what I do.
I love my clients.
I love my dress code (what dress code?).

I can’t wait to see everyone in 2026.
We’ll work through it together.
