Arletta Rae Vance

It is with deep sorrow, and an immense amount of love, that we announce the passing of Arletta R. Vance of Port St. Lucie, Florida. Born on October 16, 1953, at Camp Atterbury in Johnson County, Indiana, the daughter of a Master Sergeant, it seems only fitting that her life would be one of movement, adventure, and an unshakable strength of spirit. She leaves behind a brightness that those who loved her will carry for the rest of their lives. She had a rare and beautiful gift — the ability to find sunshine in every storm — and she gave that gift freely to everyone lucky enough to know her.

If you ever stepped into Arletta's kitchen, you were greeted by a sign that said it all: "Eat dessert first." That was her philosophy, in three words. Life was too short to wait for the good stuff, and Arletta never did. You could always count on finding ice cream in her freezer, a reason to celebrate on her calendar, and an open seat at her table. No one was ever a stranger in her home. If she could help, she would — and she always found a way.

Family was Arletta's greatest joy and her highest calling. She lived for her children and grandchildren, and nowhere was that more evident than at Thanksgiving, her favorite holiday. Every year, without fail, each person found a gift wrapped in aluminum foil waiting at their place at her table — because to Arletta, gathering together was always worth celebrating, and the people she loved were always worth honoring.

Her warmth extended far beyond her family's front door. As an HR director, she built a career around listening, supporting, and lifting people up — and she brought that same devotion home with her every single day. You could come to her with anything, and she would always listen. Not just hear you but truly listen. That was a gift not everyone carries, and she carried it gracefully.

Arletta was a woman who believed that life was meant to be lived fully and without hesitation. She never needed a reason to celebrate, only people to celebrate with. Whether the road stretched to Alaska or curved toward Hawaii, she was ready. She was equally at home on a long drive to nowhere in particular, windows down, on the hunt for the next roadside oddity that most people would pass right by. To Arletta, those were the moments worth stopping for — and they were always better with the people she loved along for the ride.

Arletta leaves behind her devoted husband, David Vance; her children, Amanda and Wayne Lannan, and Amber and LD Smith; her grandchildren, Tyler Duke, Kameron Lannan, and KaiLani Smith; and her brothers, Daniel, Tom, and Rocky Burkhead — a family she adored and who adored her right back. Also by her side throughout her journey were her beloved dogs, Dunkin and Misha, whose loyalty and companionship brought her endless happiness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Master Sergeant Edward W. and Mildred E. Burkhead, whose memory she honored in the way she lived.

The greatest lesson Arletta shared with us is that there is always something to celebrate, always room at the table, and always — if you look hard enough — sunshine waiting on the other side of the storm.

In lieu of flowers, we encourage you to honor Arletta's legacy by showing up for someone who needs you, lending a hand without being asked, taking the long road every now and then, and never — ever — skipping dessert. We believe this would be the most fitting tribute to her beautiful life.

True to her spirit, Arletta has asked that her celebration of life be just that — a celebration. A Sail Away Party will be held in her honor, a joyful gathering for all who loved her to come together, share stories, and send her off the way she would have wanted — with love, laughter, and probably dessert. She will be cremated and laid to rest with full honors at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery. Details will be shared with family and friends as arrangements are finalized. Arletta didn't just pass through life — she explored it, embraced it, and made it warmer for everyone around her. May she rest in the sunshine she always managed to find.

Carol Shelkofsky Brockhaus

Carol Shelkofsky Brockhaus, 84, of Ft Pierce, FL a loving mother, grandmother, friend, and teacher died peacefully at her residence on March 16th, 2026.

Carol was born and raised in the Washington, D.C. area. She attended St. Stephen and Blessed Sacrament grade schools and was a graduate of Immaculata Preparatory, 1959. Following graduation, she studied at St. Mary of the Woods College in Indiana, earning a degree in English with a minor in biology in 1963. Carol participated in Chorale club as well as basketball – an interest that would endure, as she was an avid follower of NCAA/“March Madness” basketball.

Carol was passionate about the things that she loved. She lived in several places with her family, including Texas and Puerto Rico, however she always considered the Treasure Coast of Florida her true home and had been a resident there since 1968. The Florida landscape captivated Carol and for many years she enjoyed her weekends scuba diving and boating with her husband Ralph. She spent hours in her yard which had become a haven for native plants and animals, especially orchids and Monarch butterflies. From a young age she immersed herself in nature. She genuinely loved animals, protecting and nurturing all creatures, a passion that she shared with her children, grandchildren, and students.

Having interests in many areas, Carol always marveled at human achievement. She loved sports and the spirit of competition; she was well-versed in running and swimming as a member of the Sun Runners/Runner’s Club in Vero Beach and as a long-time supporter of AAU/ High School swimming. Carol was a true art enthusiast and appreciated the arts in all forms, regularly attending concerts, community theatre, and art shows. In addition, she was a voracious reader, carrying a book of some kind with her wherever she went. She expressed her own creativity, especially in her youth, by drafting short stories and poems, and sketching horses at every opportunity. She especially loved and was dedicated to the A.E. Backus Museum and Gallery where she’d worked since 2008 and made a significant impact through her support and her interactions with thousands of visitors over the years.

Hired as a kindergarten teacher in Texas, Carol initiated a rewarding career that would encompass multiple grades and span decades. In Florida, she was a highly sought after substitute teacher and consistently taught in Indian River County schools. She began her full-time teaching career at St. Anastasia in Ft. Pierce and worked for St. Lucie County Schools as a teacher at Garden City, Dan McCarty, and Northport Middle; she finished her career at Ft. Pierce Central High School teaching her favorite subject, English Literature. Carol was known for being a challenging and effective teacher and was respected by her students and coworkers alike. She frequently supported her students at different activities and sporting events and truly enjoyed running into them through the years.

Carol is survived by her daughters, Aileen M. Callan-Brumfield (John) and Patricia Callan Burke (Robert) as well as her grandchildren, Anneka Early (Michael Jones), Katrina Early, Abigail Burke, Brendan Burke, and Caroline Burke, and her sister Ann Bateman (Winston), as well as her nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Ralph G. Brockhaus, her parents Agnes and Raymond Shelkofsky, and her sister Joan S. Kean.

A 10:00 a.m. service will be held at St. Anastasia Church, Fort Pierce, FL on April 20th, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Carol’s memory to Dogs and Cats Forever Inc. Fort Pierce, FL or The A.E. Backus Museum and Gallery.

When a beloved pet passes away at home, it can feel overwhelming and emotional. Please know—you are not alone.

Here at Haisley Pet Loss Services, we are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, just like we are on the human side of care. No matter the time, you will always be greeted by one of our compassionate team members. We are here to serve you and guide you through every step, answering any questions you may have.

If your pet passes in the middle of the night, you have a few options:
• We can come directly to your home and bring your pet into our care
• You may meet one of our staff members at our Fort Pierce facility
• Or, if you prefer, you can wait until our office opens and come see us then

One of the most common decisions families face is choosing between a private cremation or a communal cremation.

A private cremation means your pet is cremated individually, and their ashes are returned to you in a beautiful urn—allowing you to bring them back home where they belong.

A communal cremation means your pet is respectfully cremated alongside other pets. Afterward, their remains are scattered at sea in a dignified and meaningful way.

We hope this helps bring a little clarity during a difficult time. If you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to reach out—we are always here for you.

And as always… don’t forget to Get Busy Living.

🎉 Happy 75th Birthday to the Boss Man, Richard! 🎉

Rick is truly the heart and soul of Haisley. He has poured his life, love, and dedication into making Haisley what it is today—and it shows in everything we do.

He is the sunshine the moment he walks through the door, always with a story to tell and a smile to share. And believe it or not… every single story is absolutely true—he has never met a stranger. Everywhere he goes, he’s making friends and leaving a lasting impression.

Richard is the kind of person who would give you the shirt off his back without hesitation. His compassion, kindness, and work ethic have paved the path for so much of our success.

Even today, he continues to show up, suit up when needed, meet with families, lend a helping hand, and take care of the little things—whether it’s around the funeral home or the cemetery. His heart is in this work, and it always has been.

When he’s not here, he’s enjoying time traveling and making memories with his family—exactly where he deserves to be.

Rick, you are so deeply loved and appreciated. We are beyond grateful for everything you’ve built and continue to give.

We hope your 75th birthday is as incredible as you are!
