✨ Patient Win of the Week ✨

This week we’re celebrating a huge milestone for one of our teen patients! 🎉

She first came to us in 2023 with a 25° scoliosis curve. After 2 years of consistent chiropractic care — 28 visits total — her curve has now improved to 19°.

*She was also being treated at Children's Mercy.

This improvement is a direct reflection of her being proactive with her stretches and exercises, along with staying consistent with her treatment plan. 💚

We’re so proud of the progress she’s making and excited to see her continue growing stronger and more aligned!

Colic vs. GERD: The Two Most Common Baby Diagnoses — But It Often Comes Down to Digestion

When babies are fussy, uncomfortable, or crying for long stretches, they’re most commonly diagnosed with colic or GERD (reflux).
Even though they sound very different, both often connect back to one core issue: an immature or stressed digestive system.

Colic

Colic is defined by:
• Intense, inconsolable crying
• Crying for 3 hours a day, 3 days a week, for 3 weeks or more
• Evening “witching hour” fussiness

What’s really happening?
Many colicky babies are struggling with:
• Gas or trapped air
• Immature digestion
• Difficulty breaking down milk
• Nervous system stress that tightens the gut

Colic is often the symptom—not the root cause.

GERD (Reflux)

GERD happens when milk moves back up the esophagus. This may look like:
• Spitting up or vomiting
• Arching the back
• Crying during feeds
• Fussiness when laid down

What’s really happening?
GERD is often linked to:
• An underdeveloped digestive tract
• The valve at the top of the stomach not yet strong enough
• Difficulty digesting milk
• Irritation from acid

Again… it comes back to digestion.

The Bottom Line

Whether the diagnosis is colic or GERD, many babies are reacting to the same underlying issue:
👉 A developing digestive system that’s overwhelmed, irritated, or not coordinating properly.

Supporting the gut and the nervous system can make a big difference — which is why so many parents look into things like:
• Gentle chiropractic care
• Feeding/position changes
• Burping techniques
• Formula adjustments
• Probiotics (when appropriate)

🔹 How Acupuncture May Influence the Vagus Nerve
1. Neurochemical effects
• Acupuncture stimulates sensory nerve fibers in the skin and muscles.
• These signals travel into the spinal cord and brainstem—where the vagus nerve originates—triggering the release of neurotransmitters like acetylcholine, serotonin, and GABA, which calm the nervous system.
2. Parasympathetic activation
• Studies show acupuncture can increase vagal tone and decrease sympathetic “fight-or-flight” activity.
• This shift improves digestion, lowers heart rate, and reduces stress hormones (like cortisol).
3. Anti-inflammatory pathway
• The vagus nerve controls the “cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway.”
• By stimulating vagus-related reflexes, acupuncture can help regulate immune responses and lower inflammation.
4. Specific acupuncture points
• Points around the ear (auricular acupuncture) directly target branches of the auricular vagus nerve.
• Other points along meridians (like ST36, CV17, PC6) are also used for calming, digestive, and heart-regulating effects.

🔹 What “Reset” Means Clinically

When practitioners say acupuncture “resets” the vagus nerve, they mean:
• Calming an overactive stress response
• Enhancing parasympathetic function (slowing heart rate, improving gut motility)
• Helping the body return to balance between “fight-or-flight” and “rest-and-digest”

🔹 Potential Benefits of Acupuncture for Vagus Regulation
• Anxiety and stress reduction
• Better digestion and relief from nausea, IBS, or reflux
• Reduced inflammation and pain sensitivity
• Improved sleep
• Regulation of heart rate variability (a marker of vagal tone)
