Celebrating the 100th Birthday of Bennie Barker
We are honored to celebrate the remarkable life and 100th birthday of Bennie Barker.
Bennie was born in Ozark, Arkansas, in 1926 as the eldest of ten children. At a young age, she took on significant responsibilities within her family. By the age of 10, her mother had taught her how to cook and sew, skills Bennie used to help care for her siblings while her mother worked to provide for the family. She prepared meals and made clothing, demonstrating both dedication and love from an early age.
Bennie later graduated from Lincoln High School in Fort Smith, an accomplishment she shared with Life Enrichment Director Kassie as one of her proudest achievements. Above all, however, Bennie considers her greatest accomplishments to be her role as a wife and mother.
At the age of 20, Bennie married Lewis Barker. She fondly described her husband as “the life of the party,” someone who was loved by everyone, while she considered herself more reserved. Together, they built a life centered on faith as devoted members of the Methodist church. Their faith played a central role in their lives, as they actively participated in church activities and programs across various communities. Bennie especially enjoyed singing in the church choir.
As a homemaker, Bennie found joy in caring for her family. She loved cooking, baking, sewing, and crocheting, hobbies that reflected her creativity and devotion to those she loved. She often spoke of her husband as the hardest-working man she had ever known. Bennie and Lewis shared 61 wonderful years of marriage before his passing.
Even today, Bennie remains active and engaged. She enjoys arts and crafts, cooking groups, outdoor activities in warm weather, reading magazines, listening to a wide variety of music, attending devotional services, watching educational documentaries, and simply observing the world around her.
Bennie expresses deep gratitude for the care she has received at Methodist Village Senior Living, as well as for the meaningful friendships she has formed there over the years.
Her favorite holiday is Christmas, which she cherishes as the celebration of the birth of her Lord and Savior. It is also a time filled with treasured memories of family gatherings and shared home-cooked meals.
When it comes to music, Bennie holds two hymns especially close to her heart: “Blessed Assurance” and “Amazing Grace.”
Bennie Barker’s life is a beautiful testament to faith, family, resilience, and love. Celebrating her 100 years is truly a celebration of a life well lived.
