Swallowing issues are rarely just one thing — and they’re never one-size-fits-all.

A quality swallow study gives us the information we need to understand why something is happening, not just what’s going wrong. And it is definitely not just pass or fail. Once we know what is working and what isn't, decisions about diet, strategies, & exercises can be made together — with the whole person in mind.

Because recommendations that ignore the big picture... quality of life, hydration, nutrition, or comfort can unintentionally create new problems.

🌮We involve our patients and their families in decision making that is rooted in the our philosophy of treating the whole patient, not just one problem. 🍔We also will never stop a swallow study because a patient aspirated. The whole point is to determine what the underlying issues are and if a patient aspirates there are many compensatory strategies we can try based on their physiological response to the aspiration event. If you are getting results from swallow studies and the SLP stopped the study, you need a second opinion. 🥗 Laryngopharyngeal Reflux (LPR) is a big fancy work for silent reflux and it’s a common issue we see during swallow studies. We understand how hard it is to make dietary and lifestyle changes. Even when we know better, sometimes it’s hard to actually do better! We will help educate, brainstorm, and offer natural recommendations to assist patients in fining relief that works for them. Sometimes that ends up being medication and others it’s a combination of changes. 🥂We treat each case as if they were our own family member and make recommendations based on what we would do in that case. Since we are treating the whole patient there is not a one size fits all or cookie cutter approach. We assess the underlying impairments, the conditions and symptoms that might include risks for malnutrition, UTI, medication malabsorption, dehydration, etc prior to making dietary suggestions. 🌟Comment below to let us know if you’ve had any similar experiences in swallowing or other speech related issues?

Stroke doesn’t ask politely. It barges in and changes everything.

So when a family member takes the time to thank us for walking beside them and their loved one through recovery—through the hard days, the tiny wins, the rebuilding—it hits deep.

This is why we do intensive care. Not shortcuts. Not cookie-cutter therapy. Real work, real connection, real progress.

Recovery after stroke is possible. It just needs the right team, the right tools, and a whole lot of heart.

I worked in skilled nursing facilities for over 16 years & I met a patient who changed my entire career.

He was a retired Methodist minister—one of those people who radiate gentleness & grace even in the hardest moments. During a difficult time in my life, he was the person who reminded me I was still whole, still worthy, still allowed to start again.

He had a swallowing disorder & strict NPO orders (nothing by mouth).
At the time, I didn’t know what I know now. I didn’t have FEES. I didn’t have mentors. I didn’t have the clinical clarity I give my patients today.
That moment became the turning point of my life.

I promised myself never again.
Never again would a patient’s outcome hinge on lack of access or lack of training, lack of ability to advocate for my patients.
Never again would I be the clinician who “did her best with what she had."
That promise is why I went all-in on swallowing diagnostics.
It’s why FEES became my passion instead of just another skill.
It’s why Thrive Neuro Therapy even exists.

My people—the ones who stick with me—are the clinicians, caregivers, and patients who want clarity over guesswork… who believe every decision deserves evidence, not assumptions. Who know that "the way we've always done it" doesn't work anymore.
