🧩 October is Sensory Processing Awareness Month! 🧩

Sensory processing is how our brains interpret information from our senses — like touch, sound, movement, and sight — and help us respond appropriately.

For some children, sensory input can feel too intense, not strong enough, or confusing. This can make everyday tasks—like getting dressed, brushing teeth, or focusing at school—feel challenging.

🌟 Common signs a child may have sensory processing differences:

💛Avoiding certain textures, noises, or clothing

💙Constantly seeking movement or crashing into things

❤Difficulty sitting still or paying attention

💚Becoming easily overwhelmed in busy environments

🧡Struggling with transitions or unexpected changes

At Learn, Play, Grow, our occupational therapists help children strengthen their sensory regulation skills through play-based activities designed just for them. The goal is to help each child feel calm, confident, and ready to engage in their daily routines. 💛

Let’s spread awareness and understanding this month — every child experiences the world in their own unique way!

💛 Spina Bifida Awareness Day 💛
Today our staff is wearing yellow in support of Spina Bifida Awareness! 💛

Spina Bifida is a birth defect that occurs when the spine and spinal cord don’t form properly during early pregnancy. It can affect movement, coordination, and other body functions — but with the right care and support, children and adults with Spina Bifida can live full and active lives! 💪✨

At Learn, Play, Grow, we’re proud to support families in our community — we even host a Spina Bifida Support Group that meets monthly! 💬

💬 October is AAC Awareness Month! 💬

At Learn, Play, Grow, we’re celebrating all the ways our kids communicate! 💙💛

AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication — any form of communication other than spoken words. This can include gestures, sign language, pictures, or high-tech devices that “talk” for the user. 🗣️✨

Children may use AAC for many reasons — such as autism, cerebral palsy, or speech disorders — to help them express their thoughts, needs, and ideas.

💡 Did you know?

AAC does not stop verbal speech. In fact, it can encourage children to talk more!

AAC supports language growth, social interaction, and confidence.

There’s no “right age” to start using AAC — it’s all about finding what helps each child communicate best!

To help spread awareness, some of our amazing Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) led an in-service training for our staff this month! 🧠👏 (Thank you, Aubrey, Anna, and Emily!)
They shared how AAC works, ways to support communication across environments, and simple strategies we can all use to empower our AAC users.

We’re so proud of our team and the work they do to give every child a voice. 💬💙
