What I Wish People Knew About Getting Older...
Over the past 7 years as a PT, I’ve worked with hundreds of adults in their 50's, 60’s, 70’s and beyond who often share similar challenges or beliefs. Yes, aging can present new challenges, but just because you’re growing older doesn’t mean you just “have to live with it.” Many times - there are small things you can do to feel better.
Here’s what I wish more people knew:
🔹 Falling is not a normal part of aging
If you’ve noticed more stumbling or feeling unsteady, it’s not something to brush off. Balance can be improved, and there are various strategies you can implement to reduce your risk for falls.
🔹 Living with pain is not inevitable.
Just because you’re getting older doesn’t mean you have to be in pain. I’ve worked with so many people who were told to just “deal with it,” or “welcome to old age,” only to find real relief once we addressed the actual cause of the pain.
🔹 Even “bone on bone” joints can feel better.
Yes, arthritis can cause discomfort—however, with the right treatment approach including strength training, balance training, lifestyle changes, etc - many can manage their symptoms and live an active lifestyle, even with arthritis.
🔹 There’s more to pain than just what shows up on an X-ray.
You can’t always take a picture of someone’s pain. Pain can be influenced by so many different things including diet, sleep, stress levels, exercise routines, movement compensations, and more. Pain is very individualized - and treatment should be as well.
🔹 Diet plays a bigger role than most people think.
Simple changes—like adding anti-inflammatory foods or making sure you’re eating enough protein—can help with energy, muscle strength, and even pain relief.
If you resonate with this and are struggling with pain, balance problems, and simply want to live a more active lifestyle, feel free to reach out or book a free call on our website (link in comments.)
