Gotta love the 🐶 pups!!

PUPPY FLIGHTS: Most days, Dr. Scott Smith treats patients at Fort Walton Beach Chiropractic on Racetrack Road. But a few times a year, his office is the cockpit of a Grumman Tiger — and his passengers have four legs.

For the past five to six years, Smith has volunteered as a pilot for two nonprofit organizations — Puppy Rescue Flights and Pilots N Paws — flying dogs out of kill shelters and into the arms of rescue organizations and foster homes across the country. He does it all on his own dime: the fuel, the flight time, the airplane, his time.

“I’m a dog lover,” Smith said. “My wife and I…we travel to eat, drink and pet dogs.”

That love drives him into the sky.

Smith estimates he’s transported several dozen animals over the years, anywhere from one dog per flight to as many as four. On his most recent mission, he flew four dogs. One memorable flight had him delivering a mother dog and her roughly four-day-old puppies after a scheduling delay meant the mom gave birth before the transport.

DOWNTOWN PANTRY: Local farmers market vendors will have their first permanent storefront when The Downtown Pantry FWB opens Saturday, September 6 at 222 Miracle Strip Pkwy SE in Fort Walton Beach.

The new marketplace brings together fresh produce, grass-fed meats and handcrafted goods that residents could previously only find at weekend farmers markets.

“Opening ‘The Downtown Pantry’ is more than just starting a business for me,” said Jordan Weldon, the store’s owner. “It’s a chance to create a welcoming space where our community can come together around fresh, local food and more.”

The marketplace concept started with Whitney Cramer, who wanted to bring the community high-quality handmade, raw, natural and Florida-sourced goods.

“We were all so excited about this and thought it was something amazing to be brought to the community,” Weldon said. “I knew and saw how much it meant to our community so my husband and I wanted to make it come alive – not only for Whitney but for the locals.”

Shoppers will find local honey, grass-fed beef, chicken and pork straight from area farms, fresh produce, handcrafted items, fresh eggs, raw milk, sourdough bread and natural treats. The store will keep the same vendors weekly while adding new suppliers and hosting pop-up events for other local businesses.

'RESCUE TUBES': Two local Rotary clubs presented a proposal Tuesday to install rescue tubes on Okaloosa County beaches as part of a drowning prevention initiative that has already expanded across the Florida Panhandle.

Dion Moniz of the Destin Rotary Club told the Board of County Commissioners the project is a joint effort between his club and the Fort Walton Beach Rotary Club to place the rescue devices on beaches controlled by Okaloosa County.

“This all started about 25 years ago. Rotary teamed up with the Rescue Tube Foundation to put these rescue tubes out,” Moniz said during the Sept. 3 Board of County Commissioners meeting.

The rescue tubes are designed to assist people who attempt water rescues, often putting themselves at risk. According to Moniz, drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional deaths worldwide, with an estimated 236,000 drownings annually. It is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4.

The 10-foot posts are buried four feet deep in sand and equipped with white sleeves for aesthetic appeal. The rescue tubes can support up to three adults and feature easy-release straps. Each installation includes informational signage with emergency contact numbers and location details.
