If the essence of life is water, the basis of life might be breathing. Breathing IS life… if we can’t control our breathing we cede agency over the quality of our life and health.

We’re talking about daily breathing patterns. Nothing fancy. I invite you to begin to follow your breathing patterns and notice where in the body you are breathing from the most.

Men, we need to intentionally seek connection with other men or the issues of isolation, depression, anxiety will only get harder to cope with.

Hinge, squat, and rotation are the big 3 “primal”movement patterns. Keep a kettlebell by the desk. Grab a bar at the gym. Make time for movement 5 minute “movement snacks”. Just keep moving. Your body is your first priority. Share with a friend!

As someone who has been physical my whole life, thrown out my back numerous times, and been offered surgery for Spondylolisthesis (I got a second opinion and elected to self-manage the pain and leg numbness with Yoga and mobility work) I’m here to say that Yoga mobility work can both heal and prevent many problems. Desk posture problems are not just spinal in orientation. Consider how breathing shortens and gets isolated in the upper chest when we lean forward, hinging at the ribcage - a suboptimal pattern with many downstream issues.

Computers weren’t built for good posture, nor were the chair and desk. Standing desks are a step in the right direction but we need to take “body and breathing” breaks lest these upper body problems compound.

Men! We should all be squatting more! Know as the “king” of weight training exercises, squats are now commonly recommended by mainstream resources such WebMD, AARP, Healthline, etc as important for general health and aging. In addition to your gym program, daily deep body-weight squats ought to be in our morning, midday, and evening “stretch” protocols.

From spinal and joint health to organ alignment squats engage our core and support healthy digestion and elimination. There are literally too many benefits to name. Let alone know…
