Grief touches everyone — and supporting those who are grieving takes a community.

Today, The Peggy F. Murphy Community Grief Center of Stillwater Hospice hosted “A Conference on Grief,” bringing together social workers, healthcare administrators, and healthcare advocates from across our region for a day of learning, conversation, and collaboration.

We’re grateful for the professionals who took time to learn more about how to better support those experiencing loss.

We also extend a special thank you to D.O. McComb & Sons Funeral Homes for sponsoring today’s event!

Stillwater Hospice was honored to attend the Women in the Workplace Luncheon hosted by the Women's Fund of Greater Fort Wayne.

We are proud to have received the Silver Level of recognition again, recognizing organizations that demonstrate strong commitment to leadership development, supportive benefits and policies, and intentional recruitment and retention practices that help women succeed and grow in the workplace. At Stillwater, we believe that when our team members feel supported and valued, it strengthens the compassionate care we provide to patients and families every day.

We were also proud to have our Chief Financial Officer, Elaine Jones, serve as a panel presenter. Elaine shared how Stillwater is using data from the Women's Fund to identify opportunities and turn insights into actionable strategies that strengthen our workplace culture, support our teams, and drive meaningful organizational improvement.

Thank you to the Women’s Fund for bringing our community together to highlight and advance the important work of supporting women in the workplace. We’re grateful to be part of a community committed to meaningful progress.

• More time at home
• Less time in the hospital
• More time with family
For many, that’s what matters most.

We often meet families in the final days — when they say,
“I wish we had called sooner.”
Earlier hospice means:
• More time to build trust
• Better pain management
• Emotional and spiritual care
• Support for caregivers
Hospice works best when there is time to do it well.

You don’t need to wait for a crisis.
Consider a conversation if there are:
• Frequent ER visits or hospitalizations
• Increased pain or symptoms
• Noticeable decline in strength or weight
• More time sleeping or less engagement
• A desire to focus on comfort
A conversation does not mean a commitment.
It means understanding your options.

Studies consistently show that patients who enter hospice earlier:
• Have better symptom control
• Experience fewer hospitalizations
• Report higher family satisfaction
• Often live longer than those who delay care
Hospice is not about shortening life.
It’s about improving the life that remains.

Serious illness can be overwhelming — physically and emotionally.
Palliative care provides:
• Relief from pain and symptoms
• Emotional support
• Help with medical decisions
• Coordination between providers
You can receive palliative care at any stage of illness — even while pursuing treatment.
At Stillwater, we walk alongside families early — so they feel supported, informed, and less alone.

A century of commitment

The seeds of Visiting Nurse were planted in 1888, when women of the growing city of Fort Wayne, Indiana, banded together to deliver food and medicine to the “sick poor.” On March 1, 1900, Visiting Nurse was incorporated and hired its first paid nurse. Visiting Nurse’s mission is to provide compassionate care to alleviate suffering and ensure quality of life for those affected by serious illness through our hospice and palliative care services. Visiting Nurse cares for those who go on living, with grief support services available at no charge for any adult who has experienced the loss of a loved one. Hospice involvement is not required. We serve these Indiana counties: Adams, Allen, DeKalb, Huntington, Noble, Wabash, Wells and Whitley.
