Loving truths I share with my doula students…
Not every birth will look the way you imagined—and that’s okay.
Birth can be beautiful, unpredictable, emotional, and sometimes messy. Learning to meet families where they are, without expectations, is one of the most powerful skills you’ll develop as a doula.
There will be moments when you feel unsure, even when you’re well-trained.
Confidence doesn’t come all at once. It grows with every experience, every client, and every birth you attend. Feeling unsure at times doesn’t mean you’re not capable—it means you’re learning.
Not every client connection will feel perfect, and that’s normal.
Every family is different, and so is every doula. What matters is showing up with care, respect, and professionalism. Your worth is not defined by how deeply someone connects with you.
Caring deeply also means caring for yourself.
Doula work involves emotional labor, and protecting your energy is part of doing this work well. Boundaries help you stay present, grounded, and able to serve families long-term.
Training is just the beginning of your journey. The real learning continues with each family you support. Every experience adds depth, wisdom, and confidence—and you don’t have to walk that path alone.
Being a doula is beautiful, but it’s also hard work. If you’re ready to show up, grow, and support families in a way that matters, GBC is here to guide you every step of the way.
