What happens in S*x Therapy?
I get many weekly inquiries from potential clients, some as referrals from other therapists, some from my website, some from a general web search for relationship counseling. The other day, I sensed that a caller was taken aback when I said that I focus on s*x therapy, and he asked for details about what that would happen in my office.
If folks are hesitant, it may be that they think our work will be exclusively focused on their s*xual relationship to the exclusion of any other issues that are going on. They may wonder how much intimate detail they have to share. As an AASECT Certified S*x Therapist, I have a lot of training that focuses on s*xual issues. I've had 90 hours of classes, 50 hours of supervision, and 300 hours working with clients with s*xual issues. That training is integrated with my experience as a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. Clients (couples or individuals) that work with me can expect me to see their issues within the context of relationships. Most of the time if a person in relationship comes to me by themselves, we'll work to include their partner in the treatment, because the vast majority of s*xual issues are not just one person's problem!
Though some feel uneasy at the thought of talking about s*x to a person outside their relationship, I think I'm really good at helping people feel comfortable in sessions. I love being able to help people with s*xual issues because intimacy has a vital role in whether people feel safe, validated and happy with their partners.
