The League was well represented this week at Mayor Sharon Tucker's "State of the City Address" for the City of Fort Wayne Government.

League volunteer, Hannah Hubley, was given the honor of introducing Mayor Tucker. The Mayor's speech was interpreted in American Sign Language (ASL) by League Lead Interpreter, Angie Crawford.

We are very proud of Hannah, who graduated from the League's Leadership Academy and was recently appointed to the Mayor's Young Adult Council.

The League works with the City of Fort Wayne on many accessibility projects. Interpreting important informational messages, such as the State of the City Address, is one of those projects that allows people who are Deaf or hard of hearing greater access to communication.

Empowering, Advocating, and Acheiving Independance

In 1949, the Allen County Committee for the Blind brought Helen Keller to Fort Wayne in order to challenge the community to address the needs of people who are blind. The result was the development of The Allen County League for the Blind. In 1981, the agency became the first Center for Independent Living in Indiana. In 1990, eligibility for services was opened to all people with severe disabilities. In 1994, the organization’s name was changed to The League for the Blind & Disabled, Inc. to better reflect the Center’s service to all people with disabilities in Allen and surrounding counties. In 2006, the agency acquired DeafLink to provide sign language interpreting services and case coordination, and in 2009, the In-Home Care Division was created. In 2016, the agency incorporated Home Health Care in order to provide skilled medical care. Today, The League continues its tradition as a direct service provider and advocate for people with disabilities in 11 counties in Northeast Indiana.
