Without access to clear expressive communication people do not have the ability to show you how much they really do understand!

The meltdown could be because they do understand what you are saying but they desperately want you to know something and you aren’t able to understand them.

Sometimes with AAC there is a language boom where everything starts clicking and it’s so great to whiteness!!

So don’t start with the smaller grid size because “they don’t understand” let them prove just how much they can learn 💕

Happy AAC month!! A system with a motor plan makes a HUGE difference!! It allows their words to be automatic requiring little to no thought about where the word is they want to say.

Just like typing until you take the time to learn how to do it well it’s hard or at least requires some thought and mistakes. But once you are good at it you think more about the message you are creating than where the letters are to get you there!

AAC is so much more than a device! It’s a way to connect with others in meaningful ways. When someone gets a device they can share details of stories, tell jokes, express shared joy, protest safely! It’s a way for them to be understood easily all the time.

They may have been able to gesture and get general needs met before, but with AAC they can get specific and that is so powerful!!

Every month I do a group call with parents who are in my AAC training program! Parents have said that they:

✨ actionable
✨ answer questions they didn’t know they had
✨ gives new ideas and things to try

These myths are still very prevalent and are discussed frequently as pain points in the AAC community. They are holding people back from communicating!

Parents I encourage you to not take these myths as truth from anyone! You are your child’s best advocate!

Professionals I encourage you to help in stooping the spread of these myths. When you hear them speak to what the research is saying!

AAC is an amazing tool but it’s not an intuitive process! Parents you deserve training- more than just a one time meeting or when you have a question.

Calling all AAC-loving SLPs!
I’m looking for a Speech-Language Pathologist to partner with us on virtual AAC assessments to help families access insurance-funded AAC devices.

Here’s what I’m looking for:
- A passion for AAC and supporting communication access
- Experience in writing funding reports
- Licensed in Indiana *or* open to getting licensed
- Comfortable working virtually and collaborating
Our program puts a strong emphasis on parent training and family input to make sure every device is not just appropriate for the AAC user—but also practical, sustainable, and a great fit for the whole family.
We’re growing and looking to bring on additional SLPs to support this work. If you’re looking for flexible, meaningful work in AAC with a team-based approach, I’d love to hear from you!
This is a couple hours per week contracted position that has the ability for you to set your own number of clients at a time. You would be responsible for assisting with the device assessment and funding. Once the family has the device then they typically start ongoing parent training with me.
