Is traditional yoga asana outdated in a post-patriarchal world?

As we continue to name and dismantle the misuse of power—within society and spiritual spaces—it’s time to ask some honest questions about yoga, too.

Not the Yoga Sutras.
Not the Upanishads.
But the modern-era yoga, and the physical asana practice as it’s often taught today.

After 30+ years of practice across many lineages, and over a decade leading Pranayoga Institute, I’ve witnessed something important:

Many trainings create beautiful practitioners.
Far fewer train responsive, trauma-aware teachers who can truly see the person in front of them.

Our nervous systems are asking for something different now.
This is the perfect time for yoga therapy to enter the picture.

✨ Slower movement
✨ Agency and choice
✨ Practices that honor curves, injuries, aging, grief, and lived experience

Pranayoga was established in 2009 by Yoga Therapist Dani McGuire(Vani) as the first teacher training school in fort wayne and is now home to one of the first 25 accredited yoga therapy diploma programs by IAYT(International Association of Yoga Therapy).
