Today we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. — a leader who reminded us that “everyone can be great, because everyone can serve.”

At Hearing the Call, service is at the heart of everything we do.
Every outreach, every volunteer hour, every donation, every moment spent helping someone hear again is an act of love, dignity, and hope.

Dr. King taught us that real change begins when we choose to show up for others.
Thank you to every volunteer, partner, donor, and supporter who continues to answer that call.

Service is how we love our neighbors.
Hearing is how we help them connect.

Hearing Smiles… and a Few Unexpected Adventures!

Hearing smiles are one of our favorite parts of every Hearing the Call outreach trip — those unforgettable moments when someone hears clearly for the first time. But the memories don’t stop there!

Sometimes the journey brings a little extra adventure… like when Dr. Mary Thorpe rode a donkey through Petra, Jordan back in 2016. Let’s just say… we’re pretty sure she’s still feeling that ride nearly 10 years later! 🫏😂

These trips change lives in ways big and small — for the people we serve and for the volunteers who say “yes” to the Call.

Here’s to more hearing smiles, more meaningful moments, and maybe… fewer donkeys. 😉

From Silent Struggle to Sound of Hope — Matt & Katelyn Hay in South Africa

We are inspired to share a powerful story of resilience, purpose, and service — featuring Matt Hay, author, speaker, advocate, and recent participant on a Hearing the Call outreach trip to South Africa, alongside his teenage daughter Katelyn.

Matt’s life story is extraordinary. Diagnosed with a rare condition called neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2), he began losing his hearing in college and eventually became fully deaf as tumors grew on his auditory nerves. For more than 25 years he faced one challenge after another — including multiple surgeries, relearning how to walk, and ultimately receiving an auditory brainstem implant that helped him regain a measure of hearing. His remarkable memoir, Soundtrack of Silence, shares how he listened intentionally to the sounds most meaningful to him and rebuilt a life filled with purpose and connection.

Experiencing her father’s journey firsthand has had a profound impact on Katelyn. Seeing how hearing loss affects individuals and families — and watching her dad rise above each challenge — has ignited her passion for audiology. Katelyn hopes to one day help others regain access to the sounds that shape their lives.

Together, Matt and Katelyn joined the Hearing the Call team in South Africa, where they helped provide hearing care to individuals who might otherwise never have access. Serving side-by-side made this outreach especially meaningful — a father’s resilience inspiring a daughter’s calling.

Please join us in celebrating Matt and Katelyn for their open hearts, courageous spirits, and the hope they bring to every person they serve.

What Sustainable Hearing Care Really Means

When Hearing the Call serves a community, we’re not just fitting hearing aids for a day — we’re building a foundation that lasts.

Sustainable hearing care means:
• Training and equipping local partners
• Creating year-round access to follow-up care
• Supporting clinics so they can serve long after we leave
• Providing repairs, batteries, and maintenance support
• Ensuring patients have ongoing pathways to better hearing

This is how lives truly change.
Not through a moment — but through a model that empowers communities to continue the work themselves.

That’s sustainable care.
That’s Hearing the Call.

Because everyone deserves to hear — today, tomorrow, and for years to come. https://hubs.ly/Q03ZgvbT0

Serve with Purpose – Give 10

At Hearing the Call, one of our core pillars is Serve with Purpose — and it comes to life through our Give 10 philosophy.

Every time a participant supports our mission, we ask them to “give 10”:
• 10 minutes
• 10 dollars
• 10 acts of kindness
• 10 moments of service

It’s simple, meaningful, and powerful.
Because when we each give a little, we collectively create a ripple of hope that reaches around the world.

Serving with purpose isn’t a task — it’s a way of living.
And together, we are amplifying the Sound of Hope in communities everywhere.

In 2016, at the age of six, Sylvia’s life took a pivotal turn when she met the team from Hearing the Call. Born in Zambia, Sylvia spent the early years of her life enveloped in a world without sound, unable to hear or speak. During an outreach, the team fit Sylvia with hearing aids enabling her to truly hear for the first time. Her initial word was “mama”, marked by the beginning of her vocal expressions and opened new avenues for her development. The impact of this intervention extended beyond the immediate moment. With her newfound ability to hear, Sylvia enrolled in a special school at the Village of Hope. Each year, the team observed significant progress in her communication skills and overall development, underscoring the profound effect that access to hearing can have on a child’s life. Sylvia is now able to not only read and write but to speak. This has given her the ability to fully connect to the world around her. Sylvia’s story highlights the critical need for accessible hearing healthcare in this region.

Over the years, Hearing the Call has been able to take 142 volunteers to Zambia to participate in 34 clinic days. We have provided access to hearing aids for over 397 adults and 96 children. 1018 people were screened for hearing impairment and over 880 ears have been cleaned or referred for follow up care. Our recent partnerships with the Ministry of Health and Village of Hope have opened the door for us to raise a hearing healthcare clinic to treat and train the rural areas of Zambia.

You can be a part of this vision today! Join us on a trip. Give to support the clinic. Invest in follow up care for rural Chibombo. Every donation matters. Every person matters.

What does untreated hearing loss feel like?
It’s not just about missing sounds — it’s about missing moments.

For millions around the world, untreated hearing loss leads to:
• withdrawing from conversations
• feeling isolated or disconnected
• struggling at work and school
• increased fatigue from trying to “keep up”

At Hearing the Call, we meet people right where they are with care, compassion, and sustainable solutions.
Because no one should feel left out of their own life.

This is why we serve.
And why we believe everyone deserves to hear.

Today we’re looking back to a powerful moment from our 2023 outreach in Zambia — when Ken and Nora met with a local tribal chief.

This visit wasn’t just ceremonial — it symbolized trust, partnership, and a shared commitment to bringing hearing healthcare to the community. Meaningful change happens when local leaders and global partners walk together with respect and purpose.

Moments like this remind us that Hearing the Call is more than a mission…
it’s a relationship, a collaboration, and a promise of hope. https://hubs.ly/Q03ZgvY60

What does “Hearing the Call” really mean?
It’s more than a name — it’s a movement.

Every day, we partner with communities around the world to bring the "Sound of Hope" to people who have waited years to hear clearly again. This outreach isn’t about quick fixes; it’s about sustainable hearing care, empowering local partners, and transforming lives through connection and compassion.

Because everyone deserves to hear — and everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive.

Join us in answering the call in 2026.

Happy New Year from Hearing the Call!

In 2025, together we changed lives, strengthened communities, and brought the Sound of Hope to families around the world.

As we step into 2026, we remain committed to one simple belief:
Everyone should be given the opportunity for dignified, quality hearing health care that changes lives.

Thank you to every volunteer, donor, partner, and supporter who made last year extraordinary. The impact continues — and we can’t wait to write the next chapter with you.

Here’s to a year of service, hope, and life-changing moments.

Give the Gift of Hearing

Hearing the Call is a nonprofit organization that provides the “gift of hearing” (hearing healthcare & hearing aids) to the underserved worldwide.

Imagine having no access to hearing healthcare or sign language... This is the case of 466 million people worldwide — of which 34 million are children.

In the United States, untreated hearing loss leads to isolation, depression, and lower earning potential. In many other countries it can lead to ostracization, little or no education, and physical abuse.

Hearing the Call provides opportunities for audiologists, ENT doctors, students, and volunteers to travel to countries and areas such as Jordan, Palestine, Zambia, South Africa, Guatemala, Ecuador, and more to help us bring the gift of hearing to the less fortunate.
