On Good Friday, we pause before the mystery of Christ’s self-giving love, a love that enters into human suffering and refuses to turn away. Christ made the ultimate sacrifice for each one of us.

Saint Katharina Kasper lived out this spirit of accompaniment. She walked with the lonely, the sick, and the forgotten, offering presence along with material assistance. Her life reminds us that solidarity is not abstract; it is a willingness to stand with others in their darkest and hardest moments.

At the St. Joe Foundation, we honor this call by supporting partners who accompany individuals and families facing illness, poverty, or crisis with dignity and compassion.

May today deepen our commitment to walking with one another in a spirit of love.

As we approach Holy Week, Lent challenges us to look at the systems and structures that shape our community and ask ourselves how we can build a more just and compassionate world.

Saint Katharina Kasper didn’t shy away from the realities of her time, she confronted poverty, pestilence, war, and discrimination with courage and creativity.

Inspired by her witness, the St. Joe Foundation invests in initiatives and organizations that strengthen families, uphold human dignity, and ensure that all people have the opportunity to flourish and fulfill their full potential.

May we work together for a community where that continually strives for the common good.

Lent invites us to reflect on the healing we seek, and the healing we can offer.

Saint Katharina Kasper spent countless hours visiting the sick, tending to their needs with tenderness and mercy. Not only did she tend to physical illness, but she provided emotional and spiritual support. Her ministry reminds us that complete healing is both physical and spiritual.

The St. Joe Foundation continues this legacy by supporting programs that care for the whole person; meeting physical, emotional, and spiritual needs with true compassionate accompaniment.

May this season renew our commitment to being instruments of mercy.

On March 19, we celebrate the Solemnity of Saint Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the courageous and faithful saint whose name and witness continue to shape our mission.

Saint Joseph’s story begins with a profound act of trust. When faced with Mary’s unexpected and grace-filled pregnancy, he listened to the voice of God and chose love over doubt. Joseph followed God’s will. He stood beside Mary, protecting her dignity and embracing the sacred responsibility entrusted to them. His love and fidelity carried the couple along the difficult road to Bethlehem, where he supported and comforted Mary as she prepared to give birth to Christ.

Joseph’s care did not end with the manger. Throughout Jesus’ childhood, he worked, taught, sheltered, and guided the Holy Family with quiet strength. His life demonstrated the Catholic value that every mother and every child, before and after birth, deserves protection, compassion, and the opportunity to flourish.

This legacy is beautifully captured in the historic “Compassionate Joseph” artwork, originally created for the chapel of St. Joseph Hospital in Fort Wayne. The piece depicts Joseph supporting his pregnant wife, Mary, during a pause on their arduous journey to Bethlehem. Today, the St. Joseph Community Health Foundation safeguards this meaningful artwork, continuing its message of comfort and accompaniment for all who face difficult journeys.

Inspired by our namesake, the Foundation strives to emulate the spirit of Saint Joseph. We support mothers and fathers during pregnancy, walk with families through the challenges of early childhood, and invest in programs that help children grow up in safe healthy, and hopeful environments. Like Saint Joseph, we believe nurturing life is a lifelong commitment.

On this feast day, we honor Saint Joseph by recommitting ourselves to his example: listening with faith, acting with courage, and caring for families with steadfast love.

Prayer during Lent invites us to slow down to hear God’s voice, becoming open to the Lord’s message to us which often reveals the needs of our community.

Saint Katharina Kasper often paused in prayer before making decisions, seeking clarity on how best to serve. She also made sure those entering the order made time for prayer each day. Her example reminds us that listening is a form of love.

As we discern how to use our gifts for the common good, we pray for wisdom to support those whose voices are often unheard.

May our prayer this week lead us to deeper attentiveness to God’s will and compassionate action.
