St. Joseph Community Health Foundation Since 1998, the SJCHF has served the poor by funding and operating high-quality programming that improves health & wellness in Allen County.

Since 1998 when some of the assets from the sale of the St. Joseph Hospital were placed with the St. Joseph Community Health Foundation, the Foundation has primarily served the poor and underserved by funding high-quality programming that improves accessibility to health and wellness in Allen County, Indiana. In its first ten years, the Foundation invested $8,915,458 in the community through 584 grants to more than 150 local agencies. The grants improve access to health care in programs with established records of delivering quality health, medical, dental and mental health care to low-income clients.

Prayer during Lent invites us to slow down to hear God’s voice, becoming open to the Lord’s message to us which often reveals the needs of our community.

Saint Katharina Kasper often paused in prayer before making decisions, seeking clarity on how best to serve. She also made sure those entering the order made time for prayer each day. Her example reminds us that listening is a form of love.

As we discern how to use our gifts for the common good, we pray for wisdom to support those whose voices are often unheard.

May our prayer this week lead us to deeper attentiveness to God’s will and compassionate action.

Almsgiving is a Lenten tradition that reminds us that generosity strengthens the whole community. Those who give cheerfully often receive more than the recipients of their gifts.

Saint Katharina Kasper gathered women who shared her desire to serve, forming a community that multiplied compassion through collective action.

The Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ donated the original funds to start the St. Joseph Community Health Foundation as an act of generosity to the citizens of Allen County.

At the St. Joe Foundation, we continue this spirit by supporting organizations that lift up families, improve health, and expand access to essential resources.

May this season inspire us to give freely of our time, our resources, and our hearts.

Today marks the Feast of Saint Katharine Drexel, patroness of racial justice and philanthropists. Her witness reflects core principles of Catholic Social Teaching, particularly upholding the dignity of every person, the call to solidarity, and the responsibility to use our gifts for the common good.

At the St. Joseph Community Health Foundation, these same principles guide our mission as we work to expand access to health, opportunity, and compassionate support for our neighbors in Allen County, including those facing barriers due to poverty, race, or immigration status.

Fasting during Lent is more than giving something up, it’s choosing to stand in solidarity with those who go without by necessity, not by choice.

Saint Katharina Kasper embraced simplicity so she could be closer to those she served. Her life reminds us that voluntary sacrifice can deepen our awareness of others’ struggles.

This Lent, we remember our neighbors facing food insecurity, housing instability, barriers to care or other challenges.

May our fasting open our hearts to greater empathy and action.

As we begin this Lenten journey, we reflect on the call to conversion, not only of heart, but of how we see and serve one another. Lent invites us to become more compassionate in concrete ways.

Saint Katharina Kasper began her ministry by simply noticing the needs around her and responding with courageous love. Her small acts of care eventually grew into a global mission.

At the St. Joe Foundation, we honor this legacy by supporting programs that are passionate about upholding the dignity of every person, especially the most vulnerable.

May this season inspire us to begin, as Katharina did, with one concrete compassionate step toward loving our neighbor.

Today, we join many across the world in observing Ash Wednesday, a day that invites us to pause and consider how we might live with greater compassion and purpose. In the Christian tradition, receiving ashes marks the beginning of Lent—a season of reflection, renewal, and a reminder that our lives are deeply interconnected.

At the St. Joseph Community Health Foundation, this spirit of service guides our work year-round. Lent calls us to look honestly at the needs of our neighbors and respond with generosity, humility, and hope. Whether through prayer, service, or daily acts of kindness, this season is an opportunity to recommit ourselves to the common good.

May this day inspire a renewed focus on supporting the most vulnerable in our community.

This morning, at Servus Omnium 2026, we welcomed Kerry Robinson, President and CEO of Catholic Charities USA, for her inspiring talk “People of Hope: a Life of Service and Purpose.” Kerry reminded us that even the smallest act of generosity can have a ripple effect in the world that may result in a profound impact on someone's life. Our CEO, Matt Smith, presented Kerry with Sister Joetta Huelsmann’s book “Praying with Saint Katharina Kasper” as a token of our appreciation.

Special thanks to the University of Saint Francis, Catholic Charities of Fort Wayne - South Bend, and the Catholic Community Foundation of Northeast Indiana in joining the St. Joseph Community Health Foundation in sponsoring today’s event. The audience heard Kerry’s heartfelt message providing a perfect launching point for Lent.
