“I lived in a house with an alcoholic for about 13 years…Alateen has taught me to try to forgive my dad for the things he did, even though all of it may still hurt. It is difficult to separate the disease [of alcoholism] from the individual. My dad has a disease, but he is the reason why I am in this world. I may not forgive him always, but I am working on it.”

“Alateen Talk” Vol.54 No.1

In Alateen, teens learn new healthier ways to cope with the family disease of alcoholism. To learn more about the program, visit: https://bit.ly/2GoqASj

“When I came to Alateen, I was about to go to my eighth school. It was scary, but I was also used to it. That year I was bullied really bad, and it turned into stalking. I began to hate myself and felt no self-love. I walked into my weekly meeting crying, and I was greeted with open arms. They told me they loved me and that they were going to smother me with love until I learned how to love myself. I was shown unconditional love—how to give it, and also how to receive it.”

“Learning to Love Myself,” “The Forum,” June 2022

Many teens come to Alateen to learn how to cope with a loved one’s drinking, but soon find out that the support found in meetings helps them deal with many other situations in life.

“I came to Al-Anon many years ago, and it has been quite a journey. My sober alcoholic was doing things that really hurt me, and I was devastated. I have learned many things about alcoholism, in particular how families are affected for generations by it and how the cycle can be broken.”

“The Woman in the Mirror,” “The Forum,” September 2018

Is there a history of alcoholism in your family? Maybe Al-Anon can help.

Teens come together in Alateen to share their experiences with each other, be that shoulder to lean on, and remind struggling members that there is hope. At meetings, the teens can discuss their difficulties and share effective ways to cope with their problems. They encourage one another to apply the principles of the Alateen program so they can deal with any problems they may be facing.
