A few days late sharing this, but the moment is too important not to recognize.
On March 12, 1990, disability rights advocates gathered at the U.S. Capitol demanding passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). In what became known as the Capitol Crawl, many individuals left their wheelchairs and mobility devices at the base of the Capitol steps and pulled themselves upward step by step — making visible the barriers people with disabilities faced every day.
Just months later, the ADA was signed into law.
Thirty-six years later, that moment continues to shape the work happening across the disability services field. At Caregiver, we see every day how access, opportunity, and community support can empower individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live meaningful and independent lives.
The progress we celebrate today is the result of courageous advocates who demanded change — and it reminds us that the work of inclusion and accessibility must continue.
