CHLLD Lab The Child Hearing, Language, Literacy and Deafness Laboratory supports families through research

Would you like to learn more about your child's speech and language skills? We know that some children with hearing loss have difficulty acquiring new vocabulary words and have difficulty with early reading skills, life phonological awareness. In this study, we will look at how vocabulary learning and phonological awareness develop together in children with cochlear implants as compared to children with normal hearing.

90 children ages 4-7 will be asked to participate in this study.

$50 gift cards are granted for participation in this study!

TCU Davies School of COSD graduate and undergraduate students partnered with faculty-led research labs to deliver a series of free professional development seminars for more than 150 child care professionals serving the Tarrant County area. Dr. Lund's COSD 60463 graduate class plus CHLLD and Bilingual Education and Research Laboratory lab members gave a series of evidence-based presentations!

Brooke Johnson, UG '24, 2nd year MS student says "This experience was one of the most impactful learning opportunities I have had in my time at TCU. It not only gave me perspective on professional development, but it also encouraged my confidence in the knowledge I have acquired throughout my education. Sharpening my presentation skills inspired me to continue investing in opportunities like this in my clinical career."

Last Friday, the CHLLD lab helped host the Promoting Excellence in Access, Research, Language, and Speech (P.E.A.R.L.S) Symposium! In one action-packed day, our DFW area SLPs who work in schools had the chance to learn about intervention, assessment, and issues related to supervision and practice.

Attending school-based clinicians also collaborated with our PhD student researchers to identify issues in schools that need to be addressed. We are proud of the PhD students and all of the CHLLD lab members that helped make this day possible!

Shoutout to the for providing free CEUS for all our learners!

IT’S WRAP TIME!
It's spring semester and we’re wrapping up thesis projects with our second-year graduate students and getting them defense-ready for later this semester. Manuscripts are in the works and heading toward publication. Exciting times ahead!

Flashback to Fall 2025 when Dr. Courtney Trevino, (2nd year postdoc) and Liza Gonzalez (2nd year grad student) were in the field collecting data for Liza’s thesis on word learning in children with Autism who use AAC to communicate. Excited to cheer Liza on as she defends her thesis in April!!

Have you ever wondered how to find research studies that might be right for you or your child?

We’re building a research registry to help connect families and individuals with studies in the Davies School of Communication Sciences & Disorders.

We’re looking for both adults and children — with or without communication or swallowing disorders.

Just complete a 5–10 minute survey, and we’ll reach out when a study matches your profile. You’ll only hear from researchers within the Davies School (and we will keep your contact information confidential!).

Use the QR code for more information or see the brochure in the comments!

Joining the registry helps support research that strengthens early communication, swallowing, and language outcomes in our community. 💜

The CHLLD Lab + Davies School of COSD teamed up with International Kids Academy this weekend to bring Santa to the community — and fun fact: Santa is also a TCU MBA student! 🎅🐸💜

Along with the holiday joy, we shared information about the speech and language research studies happening in the Davies School. Making sure every family has access to these opportunities is a core part of our mission.

Research studies can be a powerful way for families to:
✨ receive high-quality information about speech and language skills
✨ participate in assessments that support early learning
✨ share their own stories about access, growth, and communication

And behind the scenes? Students from all levels — undergraduate, masters, and PhD — work side-by-side to support these community partnerships and build the science that supports children and families.

Thank you, IKA, for an amazing day! 🎄💜

Pre-finals cookie decorating with the CHLLD Lab! 🍪💬

Being part of a research community means more than running studies — it means having people who celebrate with you, learn with you, and remind you to take breaks when things get busy.

As finals approach, we’re grateful for this group that knows how to work hard and take care of one another.

Our PhD student panel of judges loved Ella's ornament cookies! In the end, everyone collaborated to make a CHLLD Lab Village (originally named the CHLLD Lab Compound, but that felt a little too intense 🤣)

We’re trying something NEW! 🚀
This reel features highlights from our brand-new YouTube series where we chat about papers written in the CHLLD Lab — what we’re studying, why we’re studying it, and how it impacts kids with communication disorders.

Whether you're a practicing SLP, a future grad student, or just curious about research… these conversations are for you. 💜

Congratulations to Nikki Batinick Hoopes, who was awarded the prestigious ASHFoundation Grant for Early Childhood Research at the ASHA Convention in Washington, D.C.

This remarkable honor recognizes innovative, impactful work that advances the future of early childhood communication research and we could not be more thrilled to see her dedication celebrated on a national stage.

We are inspired every day by the passion and excellence our team brings to the field, and moments like this remind us of the meaningful impact we can make together. 💙

Picking a PhD program? Start with the mentor, not the university. ✨

For practicing SLPs returning to grad school, the right mentor makes ALL the difference.
Look for someone who…
🔹 Does research you care about
🔹 Works well with clinicians
🔹 Has a strong, supportive lab culture
🔹 Advocates for your professional and academic goals
🔹 Communicates clearly and consistently

Your PhD mentor becomes your guide, your champion, and your training partner. Choose the person who feels like the right fit — not just on paper, but in real conversations. 🌟

“What made you decide to get a PhD?” 💭
We asked our students — and their answers might surprise you!
A PhD isn’t just about more school. It’s about shaping the future of the field, discovering what works (and why), and empowering others through research and teaching. 🌟
If you’ve ever wanted to make a difference beyond the therapy room, this could be your path.
