African Proverb (South Africa) : β€œI heard is not the same as I saw”

MEANING: This proverb draws a clear line between hearsay and experience. What we hear, no matter how confidently it is spoken, is not equal to what we have personally seen, verified, or lived through. It warns against accepting things blindly simply because they were heard. It also teaches discernment. A wise person understands that secondhand information is limited. There is a difference between opinion and evidence, between rumor and reality. What is seen carries weight because it is grounded in direct experience. What is heard must be tested. At a deeper level, this proverb speaks to judgment and fairness. It encourages us not to form conclusions about people or situations based only on what others say. Many misunderstandings, and even conflicts, begin because someone acted on what they heard rather than what they knew to be true.

In today’s world, where information spreads faster than ever, this wisdom is even more relevant. Not everything that is shared is accurate. Not everything that is repeated is reliable. The responsibility lies with us to pause, verify, and seek truth before we believe or act. In essence, this proverb reminds us that truth is not inherited through noise. It is discovered through clarity. Be discerning! SHARE THIS WISDOM to inspire someone

🍷 A Sip of History

Red wine has been part of human culture for over 8,000 years, with the earliest traces found in Georgia (the country, not the U.S. state). Ancient civilizations like the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans celebrated it not just as a drink but as a symbol of community, ritual, and pleasure. Fast forward to today, red wine is still poured at gatherings large and small, carrying that same legacy of connection.
