If you have any interest in advocacy on a local, state, or national level, then the Student Osteopathic Medical Association is the club for you! It provides really great (and easy!) opportunities to make your ideas heard and National SOMA will even advocate to other organizations for you like the AOA or the board that determines accreditation for osteopathic colleges.

The application to become a First Year Rep for SOMA has opened! This is a great opportunity to gain leadership experience and get involved in advocacy. This is open to all first year TCOM students, so if you know someone who might be interested, please share this with them! You do not need to be a national SOMA member to apply. Come learn how to make your voice heard by writing a Resolution & submit your policy idea to the Texas Medical Association and/or Student Osteopathic Medical Association! This Tuesday, August 3rd @ 12pm, your chapter of the TMA/SOMA will explain what a resolution is, how to go about writing one, and why it's so important for medical students to get involved in the process (we have great ideas)! Pride at UNTHSC is hosting an awesome event today at 2! Dr. Esplin will be speaking on how recent policies affect patient care in regards to LGBT+ patients. As a political advocacy organization, this is something we should know about and could potentially take action on in the future. Also, free cookies!

May is mental health month! To promote mental wellness, we are hosting a panel with recent TCOM grads to talk about mental health and burnout as medical students. They have great insight on where we've been and where we're going to be soon. Please come and learn with us next Wednesday from 7-8!
