Julie Rake Integrative Medicine It is a real movement and in essence the goal is restoring the focus of medicine onto health and healing and away from disease and mere symptom management.

People often ask, “What is Integrative Medicine (IM)?” The short answer is that IM is the intelligent combination of traditional conventional medicine combined with evidenced based complimentary and alternative treatments. To me IM means a lot more. The IM practitioner embodies health, is a steward of healing and a curator of wholeness. We commit to exemplify the lifestyle we recommend. Whether the patient needs assistance in the arenas of mind, body or spirit, the provider is adept at partnering with and providing care in any and all of these domains. Today we have excellent practitioners of conventional medicine who manage chronic disease processes and are skilled at critical care. However, we are in crisis in unprecedented ways. Brene Brown, Doctor of Social Science, reminds us “We are the most in debt, addicted and obese adult cohort in American history.” We are in desperate need of practitioners proficient in healing the moral and spiritual wounds that drive damaging behaviors. We need providers practiced at untying the knots and neural pathways that drive negative, damaging and repetitive thinking. We need healers who can assist with personal transformation in exceptional ways raising awareness and expanding consciousness. Finally, we need agents of courage willing to step into the lives of another, to empathically take the journey together. Since antiquity, the role of healer was to lead people out of the darkness of infirmary into the light of health. Having faced our own injuries and illnesses on our own healing journey, we are familiar with the path. In the words of the great teacher Pema Chodron “Only when we know our own darkness well can we be present with the darkness of others.” The journey into healing is best supported when travelled with a skillful, compassionate and ethical leader to carry the lantern. Integrative Medicine is the vessel through which I attempt to assist in revitalizing and invigorating suspended and infirm lives.

To all the "highly sensitives" out there.
"The highly sensitive tend to be philosophical or spiritual in their orientation, rather than materialistic. They dislike small talk. They often describe themselves as creative or intuitive. They dream vividly. They love music, nature, art, & physical beauty. They feel exceptionally strong emotions--sometimes acute bouts of joy, but also sorrow, melancholy, and fear. Highly sensitive people also process information about their environments--both physical and emotional--unusually deeply. They tend to notice subtleties that others miss--another person's shift in mood, or a lightbulb burning a touch too brightly." ~ Susan Cain. Have a Wonderful Wednesday! 🌝

I’ve been presenting my TEDx talk to audiences around the valley. It’s been a labor of BIG love.

Here’s what happened the night before my first “official” presentation. I dreamt I was in a crowded place with hundreds people. Someone said, “Your dad is here.” (He passed 30 yrs ago). I see him rolling up in a wheelchair. (He was never in a wheelchair). I run towards him and he’s tired. But he made it. I bend forward and hug him. I put my head on his chest and stay like that for a long time. I felt pure love. He never said anything. It didn’t feel like a dream. It felt like a “visitation.”

My talk delves deeply into healing; individual, as well as “inter-generational” healing work.

I’ve heard it all: “My mother was an abusive alcoholic,” my father beat my mother,” “I was molested, or raped.” “I endured religious abuse.” “I grew up in the foster system.” “I was neglected.” “There was no food, I had to raise my siblings.” “We were poor. I was ashamed.” “I was always humiliated.” “I’ve made some big mistakes with my own kids ~ I wished I’d known better.”

All families have dysfunction. Some minimal while others endure the unimaginable. So many people are doing healing work. Each time a person gets help for that addiction, choses sobriety, forgives, transcends an old pattern…that’s the work. One step at a time. YOU are the 🔗 that breaks the chains of pain, addiction, and grievance. You are the link that breaks the curse. What we plant today matters. 🌱

I’m the old soul in the photo with no smile. That’s my dad looking young, happy, and healthy. He was a kind and gentle soul. He struggled with alcoholism mightily. He lost the fight. I’m fighting battles in his wake. I’m writing a new story and its final chapters are glorious. Stay strong! Don’t give up! There are many pages yet to be written! Have a happy, healthy, healing Sunday. 💙🌏

Yesterday when I opened my eyes after meditating I saw The “Eye of Horus” in the sky. Some ancient Egyptian interpretations:

👁️ In ancient Egypt, the Eye of Horus was an emblem of resilience and unyielding vision. It offered protective power to sharpen inner sight. It reminds us we can conquer any storm.

🧠 When the Eye of Horus is superimposed over a cross-section of the human brain, each of the six sections correspond to the sensory centers of our five senses and to the corpus callosum, white matter fibers in the brain that facilitates communication between the two halves.

🛡️ The Eye of Horus offered symbolic safety and protection on dangerous journeys.

🌏 It represented the power of light conquering darkness.

If this message found you today remember ~ you are safe, protected, cared for and loved. 💙
