Speech and Voice Therapy Center, LLC

Speech and Voice Therapy Center, LLC Providing vocal cord dysfunction (VCD), EI-PVFM, EILO, and voice therapy for children and adults, locally and afar, in person and through telemedicine.

Sharon Frank, Speech-Language Pathologist, specializes in voice disorders and vocal cord dysfunction. She started Speech and Voice Therapy Center in 1998. Many of our adult and pediatric clients need to improve their vocal clarity to function better in a variety of settings (home, work, socially, community) or to be better singers. Some of these adults are trying to avoid vocal fold (cord) surgery or need post-operative voice therapy. Finally, some of our clients are teens who want to participate and excel in sports without having breathing problems due to vocal cord dysfunction. We provide comprehensive initial evaluations by thoroughly reviewing our client's history, conducting formal and informal testing, analyzing the test results, formulating a therapy plan, and discussing the results and recommendations with the client/family so they have a clear understanding of the client's current status, prognosis, and therapeutic goals at the completion of their first visit to this Center.

The P.I.E. Approach: A Holistic Approach to Treating Athletes with EILO/VCD.

Our study has been published in ASHA Perspectives
https://pubs.asha.org/doi/10.1044/2025_PERSP-25-00038

This retrospective study looked at the results of a holistic therapy approach for athletes with breathing problems due to abnormal closing of the vocal cords, which results in not being able to get enough air in during exertion.

This disorder is more commonly known by the public as vocal cord dysfunction (VCD); however, the term exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction (EILO) is becoming more recognized by professionals. There is also growing evidence that athletes with EILO may have dysfunctional breathing.

The approach describes addressing the whole person by treating the physical, intellectual, and emotional (P.I.E.) aspects of breathing to optimize oxygenation throughout the body and reduce dysfunctional breathing.

Patients were given three validated measures before and after therapy. On the post-therapy scores, 81.7-100% of the patients scored in the normal range, depending on the outcome measure given.
