Often when I fish I’m open to spiritual lessons. Lately I’ve been telling God “I get it! This is like the spiritual life.” Encounter trials, fight against your physical frailties, hope your tools are in good shape, navigate the conditions, and do all of this amidst all of the shortcomings of other people out for themselves. After two horrible days of fishing—today was nirvanna. I cannot say why, only that it’s true. And I’m ready to practice my gratitude. It’s not missed on me that God is always with me — but some environments are just more conducive to a successful day. All in all we need the both/and. If I didn’t have crappy fishing days how would I know how joyful the successful ones are? I’m like a child, really. And thankfully He is a loving, good father.
