Today we wrap up November - the last day of National Hospice and Palliative Care Month for this year! At Main Street Hospice, we are blessed with caring, compassionate staff who are experts in their individual roles! Hopefully this month our Facebook friends have seen a glimpse into the hearts of a sampling of our staff!
Today let me introduce you to Debbie! Debbie is one of our amazing Social Workers and we are so blessed to have her on our Team!
Debbie shares:

“The Starfish Story has always resonated with me as a social worker:

One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean. He asked the boy, "What are you doing?"
The boy replied, "Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The tide is going out and if I don't throw them back, they'll die."
"Son," the man said, there must be hundreds of starfish on the beach. What difference does it make?"
Thoughtfully, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it back into the water.
Then he smiled and said, "It made a difference to that one."

Almost impulsively, I started with Main Street Hospice about 9 months ago after being retired for a year. Working for Main Street Hospice has been a perfect fit for me because we are able to engage with patients and their families as unique individuals. We recognize that there is no one way to deal with this difficult time and support everyone's journey in the ways they need. I am happy to be part of Main Street Hospice because kindness, respect, expertise, teamwork and empathy are the priorities”

Tammy and I married in 2008 and I gained two bonus daughters. Tammy and I have two grandchildren. Riley is nine and Anderson is four. I’ve worked as a chaplain at MSH since April, 2019. I believe with all of my heart that I’m doing exactly what God has “wired” me to do and that I’m the most blessed person to be doing what I’m doing and where I’m doing it!”

Today let me introduce you to Travis. Travis is one of our amazing nurses and we are so blessed to have him on our Team!

Travis shares:
“I’m 39 years old originally from Brownstown Indiana. I have been married to my amazing wife for 12 years. We have 3 kids. Our daughter is 19 and twins boys are 10. Faith and family are the two most important things to me. In my free time I enjoy IU sports.
Why Hospice: I chose Hospice because I feel like the Lord was leading me that way. I had been considering it for a few months and things just really fell together when I really started to pursue it. I love giving comfort to our patients and feel like my demeanor, ability to give a comforting presence really shines in these moments.
Why Mainstreet: Again it was a God thing. The way things fell together for me to be with Mainstreet can only be explained by God's intervention. I love that we are able to maintain the "small community" feel but are able to provide many resources and 24/7 care that we do so well. I love that Mainstreets core values and goals for our patients align so well with mine. I love that no matter what we always put the patient first and advocate for them and their wishes.”

Today let me introduce you to Floyd. Floyd is one of our amazing Hospice Volunteers and we are so blessed to have him on our Team!
Floyd shares:

“My wife, Michelle and I were teachers. We had the good fortuneto work with high school and university students for over 40 years. During summers off the two of us built a cabin on an island on a Canadian lake. It became our summer getaway to read books, pick blueberries, watch sun rises and sun sets and entertain friends. It was a good time with good memories. However, Michelle had Parkinson’s, and it was getting worse.
We looked into Main Street Hospice when Michelle was dying from this disease. We were surprised and unaware of the many forms of help that Hospice could provide for both Michelle and even for me, her caregiver. With this support she was able to remain at home where I could care for her during this very sacred time in her life. We had the support of nurses, aides, social workers, volunteers and loving care from the Main Street Hospice team.
After Michelle died I approached Main Street Hospice and asked to be one of their volunteers and was accepted. Volunteering for Hospice has afforded me the opportunity to use my experience as a caretaker to be of help to families dealing with the loss of those close to them.”

Spiritual care in hospice is about providing support to our patients and families that will support them in finding spiritual comfort and peace. That may look different for different people but we are here to support them in their individualized needs! We are so blessed to have Jim, Mike and Perry as our Chaplains! I asked them to stand against the wall for a picture - they are known to like to have some fun! lol

Today let me introduce you to Cara. Cara is one of our amazing Social Workers and we are so blessed to have her on our Team!

Cara shares:
“I live in Franklin with my two dogs, Roey and Rizzy. I cherish family time, especially loving on my baby nephew. On the weekends, you can find me serving in my church's children’s and music ministries.

Why hospice? I recently heard the quote, “A job is what you’re paid for, but a calling is what you’re made for.”
Hospice is not something I would have ever chosen for myself, so I genuinely feel it is a calling from God. I am honored to walk alongside patients and families during some of their most difficult days. People often ask me what I actually do, and I tell them, “I basically get paid to love on people.” I am so thankful for the opportunity I have been given at Main Street Hospice.”

Cheryl shares:
“Hi my name is Cheryl, I am a volunteer for mainstreet hospice. Why do I do that? The main reason, mainstreet is because they took care of my mom and husband. I don’t think I could have done it without them. Always there for me, I decided to give back a small portion of what they had done for me. Well it turns out I am once again being blessed. God has hand picked every patient for me. What a pleasure to walk with people through the last part of their life’s journey. I recommend mainstreet hospice over and over again. I can rest assured that they will always meet everyone’s expectations.”

Let me say this, since being here it’s everything I could want in having a career. Not only do I believe I’m where I’m supposed to be with being apart of this team and wonderful teammates at Main Street. Being there for others in a way they need us. Here at Main Street you get to be apart of something much more meaningful and heartwarming.
I am lucky to be apart of Main Street Hospice not only have they shown me we are all family, but showing families that they are our families too. We are all here for one another.”

The Main Street Hospice Story

Main Street Hospice, formerly Americare Hospice, is owned by Dr. G. Mitch Cornett, MD and Doug Weddle. Americare Hospice was founded twenty-three years ago by Doug’s wife, Kim Weddle, RN. Dr. Cornett has served as Medical Director since the opening of Americare Hospice in 1995. When the decision was made to sell Americare Hospice, Dr. Cornett and Doug Weddle saw this as an opportunity to use their areas of expertise to provide the best possible hospice services with a “hometown feel.” With Dr. Cornett’s extensive history as Hospice Medical Director and Doug’s extensive experience of founding, owning and managing a successful business for over thirty years (Deer Valley Golf Course) there was no question that this was the right decision! Main Street Hospice became official August 10, 2018 and we take pride in the excellent hospice care we provide with a team of professionals and volunteers that have been “hand picked.” If we can be of help to any friends or family ou may know in need of hospice care, please recommend Main Street Hospice.
