One of our hospice volunteers recently arrived at the Kline House just as a patient had died, his family still gathered around him waiting for the funeral home. Not knowing what to play, she played “Somewhere over the Rainbow” — until his daughter quietly slipped her a note asking for one song: "Jesus Loves Me." Her dad's favorite.

The volunteer sang it through. And when the funeral home came, she sang it again — one last time, as he was carried out.

"I know it meant a lot to his daughter," she said simply.

These are the moments that remind us: caring for someone doesn't end at death. It continues in the songs we sing, the memories we keep, and the small, tender acts that say — you were loved.

March is National Social Work Month and this year's theme is "Uplift. Defend. Transform." We are lucky to have some of the very best!

Our social workers play an intricate role in supporting palliative care patients who are coping with chronic illnesses, hospice patients and their families in the final moments of life and grieving loved ones throughout the community. Between emotionally tough conversations and resource connection, social workers are there as a compassionate guide to "uplift, defend, and transform" patients, families, and our community.

Please visit NASW for more information about social workers' impact: https://www.socialworkers.org/News/Social-Work-Month/Social-Work-Month-2026
