The best time to talk about your wishes is before a crisis — not during one.

National Healthcare Decisions Day reminds us that having an advance directive in place lifts an enormous burden from the people we love. Instead of making agonizing guesses in the emergency room, your family can focus on being present — knowing your values and wishes have already been thoughtfully discussed.

Grief affects all of us differently — and for children and teens, having a safe space to process loss makes all the difference.

A former Camp Jamie camper turned volunteer said it best: "Not many people realize what a difference it makes to be with other grieving peers who are outside your family, who didn’t necessarily know the person you lost...It’s a relief to be around others who simply understand what you’ve been through.”

Hospice volunteer Kim noticed that one of her patients lights up when the conversation turns to all things Oz — so she got creative and crafted some Wicked-themed surprises just for him! 💚🩷

"They are really easy to make, and he LOVES his swag!" Kim says.

That's the heart of volunteering — connecting with others and the reminder that the smallest gestures can bring great joy.

Scott and David Schulman’s mother Carole was at first skeptical of earlier hospice because, like many in the broader community, she thought Hospice only served people with days to live. Luckily for the Schulman family, Scott’s wife Gayle is a Frederick Health employee, and she readily saw how the discomfort of Carole’s advanced COPD could be eased by hospice care. 💚

Alison J Bomba, PsyD, LLC, Hospice Board Member, continues to grow her efforts to support our local community!

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Alison J. Bomba to the Frederick Health Development Council Special Gifts Committee!

Dr. Bomba is a local psychologist, author, speaker, and member of Frederick Health’s Good Samaritan Circle of Life. She is deeply committed to supporting the well-being of others as a member of the board of Frederick Health Hospice and a volunteer for Camp Jamie, providing an array of hospice grief programs for students in grades 1-12.

Dr. Bomba and her husband, Tate Safford, became members of the Good Samaritan Circle of Life "...because donating to Frederick Health and Frederick Health Hospice provides essential services that touch every corner of our community." We’re excited to have her passion and dedication helping to advance the mission of Frederick Health and Frederick Health Hospice. Welcome, Dr. Bomba!
