When people hear the word Reiki, many think of “energy healing” — mysterious, intangible, maybe even too spiritual to take seriously. But after training in Jikiden Reiki (the traditional Japanese lineage) and later in John F. Barnes’ Myofascial Release (MFR), I was struck by how similar these two approaches are — not just in philosophy, but in technique.

It led me to an idea I want to share:
👉 What if Reiki was never meant to be “woo” at all? What if it was simply an early form of what we now recognize as myofascial release?

“What if Reiki was never ‘woo’? What if it was simply an early form of fascia therapy?

“After training in both Jikiden Reiki and John F. Barnes’ Myofascial Release, I realized they aren’t separate practices at all — they’re two ways of describing the same healing wisdom. Reiki’s byosen cycles feel just like the tissue releases we experience in MFR. Maybe Reiki was fascia therapy all along… 🌿

Reiki and Myofascial Release are two languages speaking the same truth: your body knows how to heal.

✨ Same touch.
✨ Same patience.
✨ Same release.

Channel 3 vs. Channel 5: A Different Way of Listening

In John F. Barnes’ Myofascial Release (JFB-MFR), we often talk about “Channel 3” and “Channel 5.” These aren’t actual TV channels, but metaphors that describe two very different ways of approaching healing.

Channel 3 – The Feeling Mind (Presence & Intuition)

Channel 3 is the right-brain, intuitive space. Here, the therapist quiets the mind, softens their own restrictions, and listens with hands and presence.
•We’re not trying to make something happen; we’re allowing the body’s wisdom to show the way.
•This is where deeper releases occur—physical and often emotional—as the fascial system is given time and safety to let go.
•Channel 3 is the timeless “now,” where true healing begins.

Channel 5 – The Thinking Mind (Analysis & Doing)

Channel 5 represents the left-brain, analytical approach. It’s where many of us spend most of our day—problem-solving, comparing, and trying to do something to fix what’s wrong.
•In traditional bodywork, this can look like forcing change, chasing symptoms, or relying heavily on steps and technique.
•It has value for learning principles, but fascia rarely responds well to force or purely mechanical thinking.

Why This Matters in JFB-MFR

When we stop “doing” and start being, we create the safe, present space clients need to connect with themselves. That’s where old patterns soften, emotions surface, and freedom returns.

Healing Is Not About Fixing

The goal isn’t to fix or force change—it’s to facilitate an experience where the client’s self-correcting mechanism takes over. By blending the knowledge of Channel 5 with the presence of Channel 3, the JFB-MFR therapist moves beyond technique into therapeutic artistry.

✨ Reflection: Have you noticed how different it feels when someone is truly present with you, versus when they’re just “doing their job”? That’s the difference between Channel 5 and Channel 3.

💨 Most of us don’t breathe properly.
Shallow chest breathing keeps the body in stress mode — tightening fascia and limiting oxygen flow.

✨ Try this simple diaphragmatic breathing exercise:
1️⃣ Inhale slowly through your nose, expand your belly.
2️⃣ Pause for 2–3 seconds.
3️⃣ Exhale gently through your mouth, belly softens.
4️⃣ Repeat for 5–10 breaths.

This practice calms the nervous system, reduces fascial tension, and supports healing.

🌀 Pairing JFB Myofascial Release with proper breathing creates space in both body and mind.

An underactive thyroid can lead to muscle stiffness, pain, and weakness by:
🔹 Slowing metabolism
🔹 Shifting muscle fibers
🔹 Causing atrophy
🔹 Building up connective tissue

✨ How JFB Myofascial Release helps:
✔️ Gently reduces stiffness & tightness
✔️ Relieves chronic pain
✔️ Restores mobility & function
✔️ Supports conditions like frozen shoulder

⚠️ Remember: MFR is complementary. Hypothyroidism must be treated with proper medical care, and therapy should be guided by a certified John F. Barnes MFR practitioner.

✨ Healing is possible when both the thyroid and fascia are cared for.

The Therapeutic Opportunity
Myofascial Release (MFR): Gentle, sustained release techniques reduce restriction, restore fluidity, and make movement more accessible—helping clients feel capable of being active.
Improved Circulation & Lymph Drainage: MFR supports tissue detoxification and decreases inflammation, which may ease weight-related pain and swelling.
Mind-Body Connection: Many clients report feeling “lighter” and more connected after fascial work, which can help shift emotional patterns tied to overeating or body image.

“Inspired by 8th century buddhist scholar Shantideva’s words: ‘Being happy is simple, being simple is difficult.’
Healing follows the same truth…”

In Myofascial Release, we’re reminded that the path to healing isn’t about adding more… it’s about softening, slowing down, and allowing the body’s natural wisdom to surface.

The difficulty lies not in the technique, but in surrender — letting go of the need to control, the urge to rush, the patterns that keep us bound in tension.

When we return to the simple truths — presence, stillness, breath, and trust in the body — deep healing unfolds.

🌱 Healing isn’t complicated. It’s courageous.

1. Physical Discomfort & Restricted Movement:
When fascia is tight, bound down, or dehydrated, it limits mobility and creates low-level, constant tension. This can make it difficult to:
• Find a comfortable sleeping position
• Stay still through the night (tossing/turning)
• Relieve pressure points that wake you up

Think of fascia like a full-body “sheet.” If one area is restricted (say in the hips, neck, or back), the pull extends throughout the system and makes deep rest harder.

2. Nervous System Dysregulation:
The fascial system is richly innervated and intimately tied to the autonomic nervous system. Restrictions can:
• Keep the body in a sympathetic (fight-or-flight) state rather than parasympathetic (rest-digest-heal).
• Send a continuous stream of “danger” signals to the brain from mechanoreceptors embedded in fascia.
• Prevent the nervous system from dropping into the deep, restorative phases of sleep.

3. Pain & Micro-Awakenings:
Chronic fascial restrictions often lead to pain syndromes—headaches, TMJ tension, neck and back pain, restless legs, etc. Even if the pain isn’t sharp, it can trigger micro-arousals (tiny awakenings you may not remember but that fragment sleep cycles).

4. Respiratory Restrictions:
Fascial tightness in the chest wall, diaphragm, or cervical fascia can impair:
• Breathing depth (leading to shallow or mouth breathing at night)
• Oxygenation, which is essential for sleep quality
• Conditions like snoring or even sleep apnea risk when fascial tension affects airway mechanics

5. Hormonal & Biochemical Effects:
Sleep quality depends heavily on the balance of melatonin, cortisol, and serotonin. Fascial restrictions can:
• Keep cortisol levels elevated (stress hormone)
• Reduce the body’s ability to shift into melatonin production at night
• Limit circulation and lymphatic flow, which interferes with biochemical signaling that promotes sleep

✅ Many clients report better sleep after myofascial release sessions because the therapy:
• Restores balance in the nervous system
• Relieves pain and tension
• Improves breathing mechanics
• Promotes a parasympathetic, healing state
